Forum on medicine
YOUNGSTOWN -- Elizabeth Pugh, who will be a junior at Ursuline High School, recently traveled to Boston to participate in the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine. Elizabeth was one of 350 high school students from across the country who attended the 10-day forum. They were chosen based on academic excellence, leadership potential and an interest in a career in medicine.Elizabeth was able to hear and interact with leaders in the medical field and was introduced to a variety of concepts in public health, medical ethics, research and general practice.She also was presented with a fictional patient's case history and had to diagnose and develop a treatment plan based on that information.

Catholic schools grants
YOUNGSTOWN -- Bishop Thomas Tobin recently approved funds from the Catholic Elementary School Grant Program to go to several Mahoning Valley schools during the upcoming school year.Schools in Youngstown receiving money are Immaculate Conception, $15,000; St. Brendan, $10,000; and St. Matthias, $8,000.Other schools receiving money are Notre Dame School, Warren, $10,000; Saints Mary & amp; Joseph, Newton Falls, $2,500; St. Aloysius, East Liverpool, $10,000; and St. Joseph the Provider, Campbell, $8,000.

Golf-outing fund-raiser
YOUNGSTOWN -- The All Children Learn Differently School and Learning Center, 201 Wick Ave., will hold its golf-outing fund-raiser Aug. 13 at Avalon South Golf Course in Warren.One aim of the event is to enhance services at the school, particularly those for children from low-income families.Registration will be from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Tee-off starts at noon and dinner at 6 p.m.Those wishing to participate in event or to learn more about it should contact the center at (330)746-0604.Founded nearly 30 years ago by Mollie Kessler, the center is a nonprofit facility made up of two entities, a full-day educational alternative school that addresses the academic, social and emotional needs of children with learning disabilities; and a learning center that provides tutors for children and adults throughout the day. Both entities are accredited by the Ohio State Department of Education.
