49ers sign rookies; Peterson still MIA

Wideout Rashaun Woods signed a five-year deal.
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -- The San Francisco 49ers agreed on contracts Friday with all five of their remaining unsigned rookies, including first-round pick Rashaun Woods.
Woods, a receiver from Oklahoma State selected 31st overall, got a 5-year deal after missing the first session of workouts on the opening day of training camp. Justin Smiley, an offensive lineman from Alabama chosen in the second round, got a 4-year contract.
The 49ers also signed second-round pick Shawntae Spencer, a defensive back from Pitt; third-round choice Derrick Hamilton, a receiver from Clemson; and defensive lineman Isaac Sopoaga from Hawaii, a fourth-round selection. Smiley and Hamilton also missed workouts on the opening day.
General manager Terry Donahue broke a stalemate with Woods late in the day. Woods is expected to be a backup for the 49ers this season behind Cedrick Wilson, Brandon Lloyd and Curtis Conway.
Smiley, who impressed his coaches during minicamps, will compete with Kyle Kosier for a starting job at guard while Spencer could be the 49ers' nickel defensive back.
Hamilton is expected to be a kick returner for San Francisco.
Peterson a no-show
As expected, All-Pro linebacker Julian Peterson did not show up for camp. He has refused the 49ers' 6-year, $37.8 million contract offer, and he also refuses to sign the $6 million 1-year tender offer as San Francisco's franchise player.
"There's nothing really to initiate for us," Donahue said. "I expect that Julian will come in at some point in time and play on the franchise tag."
Peterson made his second Pro Bowl last season, finishing with a career-high 144 tackles and emerging as one of the NFL's elite linebackers, both as a run-stopper and a pass defender.
But Donahue and Peterson's agent, Kevin Poston, still haven't spoken in several months. Peterson, who turned 26 on Wednesday, is in the Bay Area, according to teammates who attended his birthday party.
"He wants to get out here bad," running back Kevan Barlow said. "He still hangs out with the guys off the field. He wants to be here."
The 49ers placed defensive end Brandon Whiting on the physically-unable-to-perform list as he recovers from offseason shoulder surgery. Whiting, acquired from Philadelphia in the offseason trade for Terrell Owens, must pass a physical on his injured shoulder by Sept. 1, or the 49ers will be able to send him back to the Eagles for a third-round draft pick.
