NILES -- The changing of the guard took place with no fanfare, no recognition and no notice.
The Niles Board of Education's meeting Thursday marked the last one for Superintendent Patrick N. Guliano, who resigns from the job effective Saturday. Rocco D. Adduci, former superintendent of the Weathersfield Local School District, assumes the post next week.
Neither board members, audience members, Guliano nor Adduci made any comment about the change in leadership during the meeting.
Board members handled routine items before adjourning into executive session. Guliano left the meeting -- with no comment -- while board members were in the closed-door session.
Guliano had the school district's top administrative post for the past eight years. Before that, he spent 25 years in a number of positions in the Warren City Schools.
Before taking the top administrative position in Weathersfield four years ago, Adduci served 10 years as assistant principal at Niles McKinley High School.
Also at the meeting, the board agreed to meet in special session at 7 p.m. Aug. 5 at Niles Middle School.
Purpose of meeting
Board President John H. Davis said much of the meeting will center on negotiations between the board and the Niles Classroom Teachers Association. The contract between the two sides expires Aug. 28.
Davis and Adduci also noted the board may award a contract for the demolition of Edison Junior High School at that session.
Davis said bids received earlier this month for the project are being reviewed by the board's attorney Chuck Richards.
"There are some issues currently before our attorney," Adduci said. "If he is comfortable and they are resolved by then, we could act on it at the meeting next week."
Adduci and Davis said if the board does not act at the Aug. 5 meeting, the contract could be awarded at the next regular meeting of the board, which is scheduled for Aug. 19.
