YOUNGSTOWN -- A city man was in stable condition today in St. Elizabeth Health Center after telling police a man with whom he had been arguing drove onto the sidewalk and deliberately hit him with a car Thursday afternoon, causing him to be dragged underneath the car.
Hospitalized is Tracy Shuler, 32, of Cleveland Street, who suffered numerous injuries to his lower body.
He was injured at 1:20 p.m. in the 200 block of Carroll Street in front of the home of the 21-year-old driver, who witnesses said abandoned the car in his driveway and fled on foot in an unknown direction after striking the victim.
Schools receive grants
YOUNGSTOWN -- Several area school districts have received grants to provide programs held outside the regular school day.
The programs are intended to provide pupils with experiences in such areas as science, art and culture, entrepreneurship, recreation, character development and drug and violence prevention.
The "21st Century Community Grants" were announced Thursday by the Ohio Department of Education. Recipients in this area are: Eagle Heights Academy, $298,836; Youngstown schools, $300,000; Austintown schools, $300,000; Mahoning County Educational Service Center, $490,576; and Girard schools, $227,956.
Court dismisses charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- Sean McIlveen's illegal possession of a weapon charge was dismissed at a preliminary hearing this week in municipal court.
McIlveen, 27, of Hubbard, and his brother, Colin McIlveen, 20, of Knob Court, were arrested July 16 during a drug raid at a Knob Court house by members of the Mahoning Valley Law Enforcement Task Force.
Colin McIlveen, charged with two counts of aggravated trafficking in drugs, had his case bound over to a Mahoning County grand jury.
Police arrest 2 juveniles
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two Forestview Avenue brothers, ages 11 and 13, were arrested on charges of breaking and entering and criminal damaging and taken to the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center, reports show.
The boys admitted to an officer Wednesday that they broke into a house on their street. They turned over a VCR and cable box they'd taken from the house, where police said they found food and feces all over the kitchen floor and feces on the bathroom floor and in a drawer.
The couch was destroyed by unknown liquids, and attempts had been made to start a fire on the back porch, reports show.
The victim said she'd been away from home for around three weeks and discovered the break-in when she returned Wednesday.
Homeowner reports shots
YOUNGSTOWN -- A house in the 10 block of East Lucius Avenue was shot at around 3 a.m. Wednesday.
Police found 13 shell casings in the street and grass near the house. One round penetrated a basement window and lodged in a wooden beam.
The resident said the gunfire woke her and she had no idea who shot at the house.
City employees get paid
CAMPBELL -- Mayor Jack Dill confirmed today that city employees received paychecks Thursday.
City officials trying to guide the community to fiscal recovery had said Wednesday that they planned to make the $75,000 payroll this week.
That still leaves city employees one paycheck behind. They usually are paid every other Friday but received no pay on July 16.
Ex-sheriff files motion
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ex-Mahoning County Sheriff Phil Chance has filed a motion with U.S. District Court in Cleveland asking that his 71-month federal prison sentence be reduced and that he be immediately released.
Chance, in his motion, says that the sentencing judge exceeded her authority in sentencing him above the guidelines.
Chance is due to be released from prison Sept. 29 and enter a halfway facility. His prison commitment ends March 19, 2005.
Felger Road closed
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Felger Road at Donaldson Road in Springfield Township is closed indefinitely because of a washout from storm-water damage to the culvert there, township officials said.
