Civilian plane enters Air Force property by mistake

VIENNA -- Two civilian pilots in a single-engine plane zigged when they should have zagged Thursday morning and found themselves in the middle of a military exercise -- and the object of a lot of security forces' attention at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station here.
The plane landed at about 11:45 a.m. on the runway shared by the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport and the 910th Airlift Wing. The private plane turned left rather than right, however, as instructed by the tower, and ended up on Air Force property, said Capt. Brent Davis, public information director for the 910th.
The pilots, en route from Philadelphia Northeast Airport to Oshkosh, Wis., were detained about 45 minutes by 910th Airlift Wing Security Forces Squadron members while their plane was searched and they were questioned.
It was determined the pilots were unfamiliar with the airport layout, and the aircraft contained a legitimate flight plan before they were sent on their way, Davis said.
Neither the identities of the pilots nor the make and type of the plane were immediately available.
