WINSLOW JR. Browns, agent meeting today
No. 5 pick Sean Taylor's signing should help move along negotiations.
CLEVELAND (AP) -- Kellen Winslow Jr.'s agent was to meet with the Cleveland Browns today to continue contract talks for the first-round draft pick.
Kevin Poston, who represents Winslow along with his brother, Carl, is to meet with club president John Collins, a league source said on the condition of anonymity.
The face-to-face meeting at the Browns' headquarters was previously scheduled, but it comes on the day No. 5 pick Sean Taylor signed with Washington.
Trying to avoid holdout
The Browns want to avoid a contract holdout in training camp by Winslow, the No. 6 overall selection, and Taylor's signing could quicken negotiations with the former Miami tight end.
The club opens training camp on Friday.
The sides have been communicating for weeks, the source said.
Winslow has been working out at the Browns' facility and going through orientation with the team's other rookies.
Kevin Poston, who has a reputation around the league for being a tough negotiator, did not return a phone call seeking comment.
The Browns' chances of soon signing Winslow, the son of Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow, improved when the Redskins signed Taylor to a seven-year, $18 million deal.
Sources told the AP that Taylor, who played with Winslow in Miami, will receive a $7.2 million signing bonus, which could jump to more than $13 million with bonuses and incentives.
The contract also has escalators that can make the deal worth up to $40 million over six years.
Important numbers
Those numbers are important to the Browns, who needed to see what other top picks were getting before finalizing any deals with the Postons.
Last year's No. 6 pick, Johnathan Sullivan, got a five-year, $15.1 million deal from New Orleans that included a $11.5 million signing bonus.
That's likely to be the starting point in negotiations for Poston, who after Winslow was drafted by the Browns, said that several other teams had his client rated No. 1 on their boards.
A roadblock for the Browns could be if Kevin Poston waits to see what quarterback Eli Manning, the top pick overall, gets from the New York Giants.
Typically, first-round picks make an average of 10 percent more than the previous year's top picks.
Winslow could get more money since the Browns don't want him to miss any time and might be willing to overpay just to get him into camp on time -- or at least soon after two-a-day practices begin.
The Redskins passed on Winslow in the draft in part because of their history with the Postons.
