Alf is returning to Earth for a regular talk show gig. The venerable alien and respected talking puppet will take a place on TV Land's schedule starting in October.
It turns out that the 30-minute special "Alf's Hit Talk Show" became a self-fulfilling prophesy. Using the format of the July 7 test run, "Alf's Hit Talk Show" will become a regular series with celebrity guests and Alf's unique take on popular culture and current events.
The series will put the 10-10-220 and 1-800-COLLECT pitchman back as a primetime regular for the first time since his NBC series went off the air in 1990. The talk show will be executive produced by Alf's better half Paul Fusco and by Burt Dubrow ("The Tom Green Show").
Original specials
In addition to resurrecting Alf, TV Land has an assortment of original specials spread out over the summer and the fall.
August will see the premiere of "TV Land Convention Special" (Aug. 4) an in-depth look at the network's first get-together of television legends, including Tim Conway, Larry Hagman and Carl Reiner. Later in the month, "Living in TV Land: Dick Van Patten" (Aug. 18) will show viewers a day in the life of the veteran actor as he plays tennis with Alan Thicke and plays poker with Barry Williams.
In September, the network has been given rare access to the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences' vaults to examine "Emmy's Greatest Moments" (Sept. 15).
In addition to the launch of Alf's show, October will see the premiere of "Inside TV Land: Primetime Politics" (Oct. 27) a Linda Ellerbee-produced look at politics on TV from "Laugh-In" to "Murphy Brown" as well as "TV Land's Top Ten: TV Cars," a countdown of famous television automobiles.
In partnership with TV Guide, TV Land will also count down "The 100 Most Memorable TV Moments" beginning in December.
"TV Land is clearly establishing itself as a destination for fans of contemporary programming with a classic TV twist," says TV Land President Larry W. Jones. "Each of these upcoming originals take the experience of celebrating classic TV to a whole new level. Our goal in making these is to create originals that celebrate and honor everything we love about the best television ever made."
