NORTH LIMA -- The South Range School District has added a new item to its menu.
Beginning Oct. 4, breakfast will be served. And if pupils qualify, that first meal of each day could be free.
At a recent meeting, the South Range Board of Education agreed to implement the federally subsidized breakfast program. The program will allow the school district to provide pupils with a meal at the start of each school day.
If a pupil qualifies financially, based on his or her family's income and other criteria, breakfast will be provided at no cost to the pupil's family. Otherwise, a nominal fee, which is to be set by the cafeteria manager, will be charged.
"This is the first year the school district has signed up for the breakfast program," said Jim Phillips, school district treasurer. "We'd like to see as many students as possible participate in it."
Free breakfasts
Beginning Monday, parents may apply for free breakfasts for their children at the office of the building where their children attend school. Information is available by calling the elementary school office at (330) 549-5578, the middle school office at (330) 533-3335 or the high school office at (330) 549-2163.
Meanwhile, the school district has set its lunch prices for the 2004-05 school year. Pupils in kindergarten through grade eight will pay $1.75; and pupils in grades nine through 12 will pay $2 for basic lunch and $2.25 for & agrave; la carte lunch.
Previously, pupils in kindergarten through grade three paid $1.50; pupils in grades four through eight paid $1.60; and those in grades nine through 12 paid $1.75. Adult lunches have been raised from $2 to $2.25. The price for a carton of milk was increased from 30 cents to 35 cents.
Reduced lunches for all financially qualifying pupils will remain 40 cents. Free lunches also remain available for eligible pupils. It had been two years since the school district revised its lunch prices.
