YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Area Urban League will hold the fourth in a series of homeownership and financial literacy seminars at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at its office at 1350 Fifth Ave. Titled "My House," the seminar is designed to help people make informed decisions on what it takes to own a home.
Convention parties
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Democratic convention party will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Mahoning County Democratic Party headquarters, 101 Federal Plaza East. The event will include a telecast of the national convention in Boston and a nationwide conference call by John Edwards, vice presidential candidate. The event is sponsored by the local party and Students 4 Kerry at Youngstown State University. Admission is free and open to the public. Donations for Students 4 Kerry will be accepted. Also that evening, house parties in support of the Democrats will be at 6:30 p.m. at Neighborhood Ministry, 75 Jackson St., Campbell, and the home of Annie Vross, 3890 Alvacardo Drive, Canfield.
Underage driver
YOUNGSTOWN -- A car driven by a 14-year-old boy was stopped by police on East Lucius Avenue around 3:30 p.m. Sunday, and the front-seat passenger, Ray L. Burt, 28, of East Judson Avenue, was arrested. Police said they found a loaded .38-caliber handgun near Burt's seat and a check revealed that it had been reported stolen. Burt was arrested on charges of permitting a minor to operate a vehicle, carrying a concealed weapon, receiving stolen property (firearm), possession of drugs and three counts of child endangering. Aside from the 14-year-old driver, two other occupants of the car were under 18, police said. The woman who owns the car told police that Burt assured her that he has a valid license. Police said it's under suspension. The woman said Burt should not have had her prescription pills, which police found in his pants pocket, reports show. The driver was issued a citation for having no license and taken home.
Littering citation
YOUNGSTOWN -- Trash and garbage littering a yard in the 400 block of North Bon Air Avenue caught the attention of police Saturday afternoon. The owner, Charles Martin, 48, was issued a citation charging him with littering. He was due in municipal court today for arraignment. Police said the property contains roofing debris, tires, batteries and junk cars, and is overgrown with grass and weeds.
Beauty salon break-in
YOUNGSTOWN -- The cash register at Salon 3410 on Canfield Road with less than $50 in it was taken during a break-in at the beauty shop Sunday night, reports show.
