Shock 63, Sting 53
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Swin Cash had 16 points and a season-high 14 rebounds to lead the Detroit Shock over the Charlotte Sting.Ruth Riley, named to join Cash on the U.S. Olympic team earlier in the week, also had 16 for Detroit. Cheryl Ford added nine points and nine rebounds for the Shock (11-12), winners for just the second time in six games.Charlotte (10-11) lost its fourth straight.Olympian Dawn Staley led the Sting with 12 points, while Allison Feaster added 10.Detroit used a 21-7 rebounding edge to open a 30-21 lead at halftime. Cash had eight rebounds for the Shock in the opening 20 minutes.The Sting pulled to 34-28 early in the second half, but missed their next 11 shots.
Mystics 65, Lynx 61
WASHINGTON -- Rookie Alana Beard scored 23 points and made two free throws with 1:11 remaining to lead the Washington Mystics to victory over Minnesota, ending the Lynx's franchise-record six-game winning streak.Beard, who made her first eight shots, finished 8-for-9 from the field and 7-for-7 from the free-throw line as the Mystics snapped a three-game losing streak.Katie Smith, who led the Lynx with 19 points, left with 11:09 remaining in the game when she injured her right knee while scrambling with Beard for a loose ball. She did not return.With Smith on the bench, the Lynx managed only eight points the rest of the game. Smith, averaging 24.2 points in her previous five games, made five of her first seven shots and scored 13 points to lead the Lynx to a 36-34 halftime lead. She entered the game as the league's third-leading scorer, averaging 18.8 points.
