HONORS
Nurse leadership award
Linda Warino, executive director of Ohio Nurses Association District 3 here, received the Mary Ellen Patton Staff Nurse Leadership Award at the American Nurses Association's 2004 biennial convention in Minneapolis, Minn. Also, she was elected to ANA's board of directors.
Warino, of Canfield, was recognized for "significant contributions to the professional advancement of staff nurses and improvement of the general welfare of staff nurses." She has served in leadership positions at the local, state and national level, and was the first local unit staff nurse to be elected president of ONA.
Warino, a registered nurse with a bachelor of science degree in nursing and certified in post-anesthesia nursing, is on leave of absence from her job at Forum Health Northside Medical Center.
The ANA said Warino has been able to advance staff nurses' issues by articulating their perspective to other nursing leaders, the media, legislators and the general public.
At the bargaining-unit level, Warino persuaded her employer to help nurses develop professionally by giving them opportunities to take certification exams locally. And at the national level, she helped create a stronger relationship between the United American Nurses and ANA.
