MILL CREEK METROPARKS August Calendar



Aug. 1: Noon-4 p.m. Bug Day. Catch this festive event devoted to insects and their relatives. Play bug games, race meal worms, hunt for bugs, view bugs through microscopes, learn about bees, and more. Participants can earn a Master of Bugology degree. Recommended for children and the young at heart. Call Ford Nature Center for information. Held at MetroParks Farm.
Aug. 1-13: 8 a.m. to noon. Chrysanthemum and Fall Aster Sale. Order forms area available at Fellows Riverside Gardens for this sale sponsored by the Men's Garden Club of Youngstown. Forms must be returned by Aug. 13. Plant pickup is Aug. 21, 8 a.m.-noon.
Aug. 4: 7 p.m. Fins To The Left (Jimmy Buffet Tribute). Judge Morley Pavilion. Lawn seating.
Aug. 4: 6-8 p.m. Yoga: Hawaiian Style. Experience Hawaii in the Gardens with a blend of yoga, island music, and tropical refreshments. Bring a mat and wear your most comfortable, colorful Hawaiian shirt. Yoga movements taught by Heidi Suraci. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. Fee: $15.
Aug. 4: 9 a.m. Health and Wellness Walks. Lace up your shoes and join in the fun "for the health of it." The benefits of moderate activity include weight control, reduced arthritis pain, reduction in the risk of heart attack, and prevention of osteoporosis. Meet at MetroPark Bikeway trailhead at MetroParks Farm. Easy rating, two or four miles.
Aug. 5: 10, 10:45 or 11:30 a.m. Tales For Twos: The Very Busy Spider. Two-year-olds and their favorite adults will learn all about spiders and their busy habits through story, craft, and field exploration. Call Ford Nature Center to register.
Aug. 5, 12, 19, 26: Boat Rides Into Nature. A naturalist will accompany you on the passenger boat for a 20-minute tour of Lake Glacier. Please register by calling Ford Nature Center beginning at 9 a.m. on the Monday before you wish to attend. Not for organized groups. Meet at Glacier Boathouse. Fee: 50 cents.
Aug. 5, 12, 19, 26: Gentle Yoga, Level 1. 8:30-10 a.m. or 5:30-7 p.m. Call Riverside Gardens to register. Fee: $36.
Aug. 7: 2-4 p.m. Kayaking. Duck! The Coots and Loons Are Out! Paddlers ages 50 and up are invited on a gentle tour of Lake Newport. Bring binoculars in case you meet any feathered kin. Meet at East Newport Boat Launch. Reservations must be made 24 hours before the program. Call Ford Nature Center for information on fees.
Aug. 7: 10 a.m. Book Discussion. "Owls Aren't Wise and Bats Aren't Blind." Read Warner Shedd's book to find out the answers to myths about nature and then join this naturalist-led discussion. Meet at Ford Nature Center.
Aug. 8: 1-5 p.m. This Little Piggy. Learn about the many uses of pigs, from pets to meat to medicine. Make your own piggy bank from recycled materials. Wagon rides will leave every half-hour. MetroParks Farm.
Aug. 8: 1-3 p.m. Kayaking. A Lake with a Shady Past. Did you know that Lake Newport is a man-made lake? Learn more about this area and the changes that have occurred over the years. Meet at East Newport Boat Launch.
Aug. 10: 6 p.m. Health and Wellness Walks. Meet at MetroParks Bikeway Kirk Road trailhead. Easy rating, one or four miles.
Aug. 10, 17, 24 and 31: 5:30-7 p.m. Yoga in the Gardens. Level 2/ Intermediate. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. Fee: $36.
Aug. 10: 7 p.m. Rocky Chirchiglia Band. Lawn seating. Yellow Creek Park, Struthers.
Aug. 11: 7 p.m. Desperado. Judge Morley Pavilion. Lawn seating.
Aug. 11: 10-Noon. Kayaking. Glide through the waters of the park on these morning kayak trips. You'll watch for wildlife and learn some early history of the area. Meet at East Newport Boat Launch.
Aug. 13: 8:30-10 a.m. Breakfast Botany: The Gourd Family. Start the morning with a brisk walk in the Gardens to admire plants belonging to the gourd family, such as pumpkins and squash. Return to the Garden Cafe to learn more while enjoying a light breakfast. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. Fee: $6, county resident; $8, nonresident.
Aug. 14: 1-4 p.m. Family Garden Day. You'll see the Family Garden at Fellows Riverside Gardens for children of all ages. Make a butterfly magnet, plant seedlings, sip herb lemonade and share the fun.
Aug. 15: 1-5 p.m. Sunny Days of Summer. Join us as we celebrate the end of summer with sunflowers. Take a wagon ride around the sunflower fields, attend the Green Team composting seminar, make a sunflower seed mosaic and enjoy other sunflower-themed activities. MetroParks Farm.
Aug. 15: 2 p.m. Wanna Be Cool? Are you looking for a cool way to spend a summer afternoon? Don't miss this hike through Mill Creek Gorge. Meet at Lanterman's Mill. Moderate difficulty with hills and steps, two miles.
Aug. 15 & amp; 29: 2-2:30 p.m. Guided Tour of Fellows Riverside Gardens. Enjoy a leisurely walk in the Gardens and see the vibrant hues of the bedding plants displaying their summer colors. A guide will point out highlights while sharing anecdotes and history. Sign in at the reception desk on the afternoon of the tour.
Aug. 18: 7 p.m. The Shagadelics. Judge Morley Pavilion. Lawn seating.
Aug. 18: 9 a.m. Hike for Wellness Walks. Meet at Lanterman's Mill. Moderate difficulty with steps, two or four miles.
Aug. 20: 9 a.m. start. Par 3 Golf. After-Hours Tournament. Two-person scramble. 18 holes. Closest to the Pin Contest and prizes. Registration beings Aug. 7. Call Par 3 Golf Course to register. Fee: $15 per team.
Aug. 20 or 21: Friday, 10 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. Saturday; 10 a.m. Preschool Nature Hour: Butterfly Magic. What is delicate and colorful with an magic life cycle? Aug. 21: 1 p.m. Hopewell Hike. Enjoy a hike to our historic landmark, the Hopewell Furnace. Wear old shoes. Meet at Yellow Creek Park Office. Moderate difficulty with stream crossings, three miles.
Aug. 21: 10 a.m. -noon. Flower Arranging With Marie. Gather the essence of a summer garden and display it in a picnic basket. Marie Borocz will help step by step as you create this charming fresh-flower arrangement of carnations, daisies and sunflowers. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. Fee: $25, county resident; $32, nonresident.
Aug. 22: 10 a.m.-noon. Red Skies and Upside Down Leaves. What kind of weather lore can you remember? Can caterpillars foretell a cold winter, or do birds warn us of brewing storms? Paddle with us on Lake Newport and we'll find out which of these bits of wisdom are true and which are fanciful. Meet at East Newport Boat Launch.
Aug. 24: 6 p.m. Health and Wellness Walks. Meet at golf course overflow parking lot on West Golf Drive. Easy rating, one or three miles.
Aug. 25: 10-Noon. Kayaking. Glide through the waters of the park on these morning kayak trips. We'll watch for wildlife and learn some early history of the area. Meet at Lake Glacier Boathouse.
Aug. 25: 7 p.m. Hellenback classic rock. Judge Morley Pavilion. Lawn seating.
Aug. 27: 7 p.m. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. Judge Morley Pavilion. Lawn seating.
Aug. 28: 6:30-9 p.m. Hike and Sing. Stretch your leg muscles on this hike through Cascade Ravine and the Mill Creek Gorge and then stretch your vocal chords with musician Roland Kausen at a campfire sing-along. Meet at Chestnut Hill Pavilion. Moderate difficulty with hills and steps, two miles.
Aug. 28-29: Noon-5 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. Men's Garden Club Horticulture Show. Admire summer's bounty of flowers and vegetables at this show.
Aug. 29: 10 a.m. Bike Hike. Enjoy a morning ride along the MetroParks Bikeway. We'll look and listen for wildlife and learn the history of the area. Helmets are required. Meet at the Bikeway trailhead at the MetroParks Farm. Easy rating, eight miles.

Melnick Museum. "Postcards From the Past." Over 100 years of sentiments are expressed in the colorful personal postcard messages written by summertime tourists describing the beauty of Mill Creek Park. Through August.
Weller Gallery. Aug. 27-Oct. 10. "Painting: Tradition and Technology." Let your imagination travel to landmarks near and far as you view Kay Wilson's oil and digital paintings.
SUMMER AT THE METROPARKS FARM
Our barns are open every day throughout the summer during the hours listed and visitors are welcome to see the farm animals:
Monday, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Group tours by appointment only. Off-site programs are available..
Wednesdays: 7:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Call the Farm to reserve a space for your family on the 10 a.m. tractor-wagon guided tour.
Saturdays: 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The AgVenture Exhibit Barn and playroom will be open. Stop by and have fun learning about agriculture.
