KEYSTONE CLIPS Shorts notice: Commissioner comments on other's attire

Hermitage City Commissioner Duane Piccirilli had no qualms about nominating fellow Commissioner Larry Gurrera to the vacant post of vice president of the board last week. However, after Gurrera won the post in a 5-0 vote and thanked the others for their support, Piccirilli offered some advice on Gurrera's choice of clothing. "Tell him no more shorts," Piccirilli quipped, a reference to Gurrera's penchant for showing up at summer work sessions wearing shorts.
Camp KIDS Day
More than 200 fifth- and sixth-graders from across Mercer County spent Thursday on the courthouse lawn in Mercer Borough as part of Camp KIDS Day. The event, sponsored by the Mercer County Behavioral Health Commission Inc., featured interactive and fun learning sessions. It's a free summer day camp program provided in collaboration with the Commodore Perry, Farrell, Greenville, Hermitage, Jamestown, Lakeview and Sharon City school districts. Thursday's event included storytelling, team building activities and a visit by the Allegheny Township K-9 Unit.
LaGrotta appointed
State Rep. Frank LaGrotta of Ellwood City, D-10th, has been appointed to serve on the Pennsylvania Public School Building Authority, which is the state's agency for the funding of public education facilities. House Democratic Leader H. William DeWeese made the appointment, citing LaGrotta's legislative experience with education issues as the primary reason for his decision. LaGrotta will serve as the minority leader's designee to the authority for the remainder of 2004. The PSBA helps public schools districts, community colleges and vocational/technical schools in the state obtain lower-cost, tax-exempt loans for the construction, improvement and equipping of educational facilities.
