WEST ALLIS, Wis. -- Vitor Meira won the pole Saturday for the inaugural Menards A.J. Foyt Indy 225 at The Milwaukee Mile.
Meira took his first pole of the season, averaging 169.338 mph at the 1-mile oval. To earn his first Indy win today, Meira will have to hold off series points leader Tony Kanaan, who qualified second with a speed of 168.597 mph.
Meira sits in 10th place in the standings, 155 points behind Kanaan.
Meira's Rahal Letterman Racing teammate Buddy Rice finished third, followed by Sam Hornish Jr., who had the best lap times during trials at the track in June. Helio Castroneves qualified fifth.
Scott Dixon hit the wall in the fourth turn on his second lap, causing heavy damage to his car. He was taken to Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital for precautionary X-rays on his right knee and left ankle. He said he expected to race today, but would have to start at the back with a different car.

HOCKENHEIM, Germany -- Michael Schumacher took his first pole position in two months by leading qualifying Saturday at the German Grand Prix, giving him a good chance to match his own record of 11 wins in a season.
Entering the 12th race of the season he has just six poles but 10 wins.
Schumacher had a time of 1 minute, 13.306 seconds in his Ferrari on the 2.843-mile course to pick up the 61st of his career, four less than Ayrton Senna's record. His last pole came at the European Grand Prix at the end of May.
Schumacher is trying for his 11th victory in 12 races this season. In 2002, he set the F1 record of 11 wins in 17 races. Ferrari drivers won 15 of 17 races that season.
