Report: Deters won't be charged

COLUMBUS (AP) -- A Cuyahoga County grand jury investigating whether convicted former stockbroker Frank Gruttadauria had bribed a public official connected to the state treasurer's office is not expected to indict Treasurer Joseph T. Deters, a newspaper reported today.
Two sources told The Columbus Dispatch that it appears Deters will not face charges.
Gruttadauria, who is serving a seven-year sentence for bilking clients out of $125 million, pleaded guilty in March to state charges and agreed to cooperate with the grand jury seated in Cleveland. Gruttadauria has admitted to bribing a public official connected to the treasurer's office. The official has not been identified.
He also said he used the Hamilton County Republican Party to conceal a $50,000 donation to Deters in 2001 and illegally reimbursed others $7,000 for donating to Deters,
Deters testified June 4 before the grand jury. He has denied any wrongdoing. At least two people and possibly a third are negotiating terms of deals that would allow them to plead guilty to misdemeanor charges and avoid jail time, sources told the Dispatch.
Brian Dickerson, an attorney for former Deters chief of staff Matt Borges, said he is having discussions with Special Prosecutor Thomas J. Sammon "trying to determine a conclusion to this matter."
