Carnival rides stolen
YOUNGSTOWN -- Six carnival amusement rides -- tug boats and train engines -- worth $7,200 were stolen from Lisko Amusements on McGuffey Road, reports show. The theft was discovered Thursday.
Someone cut through a fence on the property at 3865 McGuffey to gain entry to the rides, which were in crates.
Dog bites officer's leg
YOUNGSTOWN -- Patrolman Brian Booksing was bitten in his right calf by a black-and-white dog of unidentified breed around 7:30 p.m. Thursday during a search for a man driving a white Chevrolet Cavalier.
It wasn't immediately clear why the officer was looking for the man. Booksing saw a man run from a white Cavalier to the rear of a house in the 100 block of North Belle Vista Avenue.
As the officer approached the back door and ordered the man out, the dog barked and then bit him. The bite broke the skin. An ambulance crew applied alcohol wipes and a cold compress.
The dog's owner, John Perkins, 28, told police that the dog had a rabies shot in February. He was issued a citation for not having a license for the dog.
Driving under suspension
YOUNGSTOWN -- Lachon Phillips, 27, of School Street N.W., Warren was arrested around 2:30 a.m. today on the South Side on charges of driving under suspension and playing loud music.
When Phillips' Cadillac was stopped on Market Street, he identified himself as Terrence Warren and gave police a Social Security number that didn't jibe with that name, reports show.
He then identified himself as the owner of the Cadillac and a check of its license plate number revealed that Phillips' driver's license is under two suspensions, police said. Phillips was booked into the Mahoning County Jail pending arraignment today in municipal court.
Parking lot sealing
HUBBARD -- The Hubbard Public Library parking lot project has been rescheduled for Sunday.
The parking lot and drive-up book return will be closed during the sealing of the lot. Normal access will resume Monday. In case of inclement weather, the work will be rescheduled.
Boil-water alert
HUBBARD -- The city has issued a water-boiling alert for all water customers through noon Saturday. Kenneth Graben, superintendent of water and wastewater, said a 12-inch waterline ruptured Thursday morning. Crews are replacing 20 feet of the line in the 600 block of Myron Street. Although only 10 residents and one business were without water while repairs were made, the boiling alert is citywide. Graben urged residents to boil water for one minute if it will be used for food preparation and consumption.
Fire does $10,000 damage
YOUNGSTOWN -- A fire at 12:29 a.m. today at 1102 Parkview Ave. did about $5,000 damage to the two-story, wood frame house and $5,000 to the contents, the fire department said. No one was inside when firefighters arrived. The fire originated on the first floor. The cause remains under investigation.
Sobriety checkpoint
NILES -- The Ohio State Highway Patrol, in conjunction with five area police departments, will set up a sobriety checkpoint from 9:30 p.m. today to 1:30 a.m. Saturday at Milepost 19 on U.S. Route 422 in the McKinley Heights area.
Lt. George Williams said sobriety checkpoints are designed to encourage those who will be consuming alcoholic beverages to plan for a designated driver or other arrangements.
Police departments cooperating in the checkpoint are Warren, McDonald, Weathersfield, Niles and Bazetta. The Ohio Department of Transportation will provide support as well.

NILES -- Police received only four noise complaints from Weathersfield Township residents during an outdoor country music concert at a local business.
McMenamy's on U.S. Route 422 hosted the David Allen Coe show Thursday evening, the second outdoor concert in less than a week at the new venue.
In recent weeks, neighbors have complained to police and township trustees about the noise coming from the club, which recently annexed into the city of Niles.
