5-year-old suspected in death of baby
HAMILTON, Ohio (AP) -- A coroner has ruled that a 6-week-old baby died from a crushing injury to her skull, and police said the suspect was a 5-year-old boy.
The Hamilton County Coroner's Office said Thursday that Cardasia Goens had skull fractures and brain injury.
Neighbors called police late Tuesday night to report that the baby had been dropped on her head. She died Wednesday at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.
"It's certainly not a natural death," Coroner Dr. Carl Parrott Jr. said. "It's definitely not consistent with a fall."
The 5-year-old suspect is not related to Cardasia, officials said.
The case presents the challenging issue of whether a 5-year-old could be legally held responsible. Many states set ages at which children are presumed incapable of committing crimes.
Butler County Prosecutor Robin Piper said his staff was researching how this case should be handled.
"You don't arrest a 5-year-old. Even if you wanted to put a 5-year-old into the juvenile detention center, you could not do it," Piper said.
Detectives will meet with Children Services Board caseworkers to determine what services, such as counseling, might be recommended for the boy, police spokesman David Crawford said.
