CONNIE MACK Wharmby qualifies for regional tourney
Wharmby Sports pulled out of state tournament play following the victory.
STRUTHERS -- Wharmby Sports, the last Youngstown Class B entry in the Connie Mack state baseball tournament, qualified for one of the eight automatic regional berths with an 8-6 win over Troy American Legion Post 43 Wednesday at Cene Park.
Wharmby Sports has since withdrawn from the state tournament.
Billy Herman hit a grand slam in the third inning while Jessie Alfreno tossed five innings of three-hit ball for the win. Alfreno had six strikeouts.
Phillip Williamson had a single and a double with a pair of runs batted in, while John Warren added two singles, Cody Dillon hit a double, and Matt Guerrieri had a triple.
There were four games scheduled for today at Cene Park.
Wharmby Sports 10,Koch/Line Drive 9
Wharmby, working its way out of the losers bracket, built a 10-0 lead and then had to hold on as Joe Koch Construction/Line Drive rallied for nine runs before being eliminated.
Jake Gross had two hits while Mike Holmes went four innings for the win. He had four strikeouts. J.C. McCoy added a triple.
John Warren tossed 11/3 innings of scoreless two-hit ball for the save.
Adam Zakowski had a home run and a double, and Adam Boris had a pair of doubles for Koch/Line Drive, which outhit Wharmby 13-7 but committed six errors.
Troy Post 43 20, Mink 14
In the highest scoring game of the tournament, Troy American Legion Post 43 came back to outscore Mink 10-0 over the last three innings.
Mink was led by Dave Piersante and Mike Brown, who had three hits apiece. Shaun McDonald added two.
Brent Scott had two hits and four RBIs for Troy and pitched six innings of relief for the win.
Andy's 9ers 7, Astro Falcons 6
Andy's scored an unearned run in the top of the 10th inning to knock out the Astro Falcons.
With one out, Nick Boehm struck out but was able to reach first on a wild pitch. He stole second and advanced to third on an error, then scored on another error.
Adam Wigley, who suffered the loss, hit a triple for the Falcons. Jared Bartholomew, Craig Osborne and Chad Baker all had three hits. John Virostko and Brandon Skoff added two hits each.
Jeremy Rolen tossed 41/3 innings of scoreless relief for the victory. He allowed just one hit and had three strikeouts.
Ohio Yard Dogs 4, Livi Steel 1
The Yard Dogs got a complete game, three-hit performance from Evan Stanford in eliminating Livi Steel.
Stanford had 11 strikeouts and walked just one. Kurt Davidson hit a solo home run in the first inning. Vince Chieva had two hits and two RBIs for the winners.
Jake Abbott had six strikeouts for Livi. Shawn Carr had a single to drive in the only Livi run of the game.
