COLUMBIANA COUNTY Salem Foundation offers 9 grants
The foundation provides a 10 percent match to United Way.
SALEM -- Salem Community Foundation directors approved nine grants totaling $41,423 at their quarterly meeting.
Foundation President John Tonti said the largest award of $20,000 went to the Northern Columbiana County United Way. These funds provide a 10 percent addition to any donation made payable to the SCF-United Way, and have helped the annual fund-raising campaign in its program of financial support for 21 social service agencies in 11 towns and villages in the northern county area.
Other grants
An award of $5,000 was made to the Salem Area Visiting Nurses, with $3,500 to purchase a stand-up lift, and $1,500 for additional items for their Adult Day Care Center.
A request for $4,000 to purchase fireworks from the Salem Memorial & amp; Patriotic Association was approved, and $3,000 was awarded to the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce to subsidize the Grande Parade.
Also, up to $3,000 will go to Salem Renaissance for First Night Salem activities planned for New Year's Eve in the city.
Home Care Advantage, a local service organization, received $2,700 for a computer, and American Red Cross will receive $750 for computer rewiring.
Directors also will give $973.60 to the Butler Institute of American Art-Salem for roof repairs. The money will come from the Butler Endowment Fund.
Use of a previously approved grant of $2,000 to the Burchfield Homestead Society was given an OK so the group can obtain matching funds from the Burchfield Foundation.
During the meeting, George W.S. Hays was welcomed as a new director, and Melissa Costa as grant coordinator.
A public charitable trust, the Salem Community Foundation was organized in 1966 to enhance the city's cultural and community affairs. Since then, it has been funding programs with money built over time from contributors.
Donations and grant requests may be directed to 713 E. State St., with requests to be submitted at least a week before the next distributions committee meeting Sept. 30, 2004.
