ACCIDENT 2 men die in pickup, dump truck crash

The collision caused the dump truck to overturn.
MERCER, Pa. -- Two men died and a third was seriously injured when a pickup truck pulled into the path of a dump truck on Pa. Route 58 just north of the borough.
Pennsylvania State Police said the impact caused the dump truck to overturn and it was then hit by a garbage truck.
The driver of the pickup, Glenn H. Adams Jr., Brown Road, Stoneboro, survived the crash but the drivers of the two larger trucks, Jack F. Smith Jr., 52, of Walnut Street, Greenville, and Eric J. Jones, 28, of Browntown Road, Slippery Rock, died in the 11:30 a.m. Wednesday accident, police said.
Adams pulled from Lake Road to go north onto Route 58, driving into the path of the northbound dump truck, police said.
The collision sent the pickup truck off the road into a field but the dump truck overturned on its right side, blocking both lanes.
The southbound Tri-County Industries garbage truck plowed into the dump truck and then struck a utility pole, police said.
Pronounced dead
Smith and Jones were pronounced dead at the scene at 12:17 p.m. by Robert L. Snyder, Mercer County deputy coroner, who said both men died of blunt force trauma to the head. Jones also suffered severe injuries to the chest, he said.
Smith was wearing a seat belt but police didn't know if Jones was wearing one.
Adams, who wasn't wearing a seat belt, was first taken to United Community Hospital in Grove City but later was transferred to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh where he remained in critical condition this morning.
The roadway was blocked for a period of time while workers cleared the wreckage and cleaned up gravel spilled from the dump truck and some diesel fuel.
