5-year-old drowns in Berlin Reservoir

BERLIN CENTER -- A 5-year-old Lisbon girl walked into Berlin Reservoir and drowned Wednesday morning, Berlin Center firefighters say.
Sarah Duff walked over an embankment off a trail near the Hickory camping area and took about two steps into the reservoir in a nonswimming area at about 10:30 a.m., firefighters said.
The water flowed over her head and she was pulled into the reservoir, they said.
Her body was pulled from the lake about 90 minutes later by divers from the Portage County Sheriff's Office. She was pronounced dead in a Lifeflight helicopter by paramedics.
The girl was walking with her 3-year-old brother just before she drowned, firefighters said. The childrens' parents were ahead of them on a hill. When the girl walked into the reservoir, her brother ran up the hill and got his parents, who called 911.
The Hickory campgrounds are in the reservoir's Mill Creek Recreation Area, which is maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
