Former YSU coach Peters added to Ohio State staff

COLUMBUS (AP) -- Former Youngstown State University basketball coach Dan Peters has left his job as Cincinnati's interim basketball coach to become an assistant to Thad Matta at Ohio State.
Peters, who was coaching the Bearcats during Bob Huggins' suspension, joins a staff that includes Alan Major and John Groce, who had worked as assistants under Matta at Xavier -- Cincinnati's cross-town rival.
"He is an Ohio guy who has enjoyed success at virtually every level," said Matta, who was hired by Ohio State on July 7 to replace the fired Jim O'Brien. "He has a tremendous passion for the game of basketball and is one of the great teachers in the game."
Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson, the Bearcats' career leader in points and rebounds, will replace Peters as Cincinnati's interim coach until Huggins returns on Aug. 27.
The 50-year-old Peters, a Bearcats' assistant the past five years, was promoted to interim coach in June following Huggins' suspension for a drunken driving conviction.
Peters, a Cleveland native who grew up in Canton, has spent almost his entire college coaching career in Ohio.
He spent three years on Huggins' staff at Walsh in the early 1980s and later was head coach at Walsh, St. Joseph's (Ind.) and Youngstown State before being reunited with Huggins at Cincinnati.
Ohio State fired O'Brien on June 8 after he admitted paying $6,000 to Aleksandar Radojevic, a recruit who never played for the Buckeyes. The NCAA is investigating possible rules violations committed under O'Brien.
