Suspect is jailed on violation
AUSTINTOWN -- A Youngstown man accused by police of stealing stereos and CDs from seven vehicles in the township earlier this month is in Mahoning County jail on a probation violation.
Michael Maynard, 23, of North Osborn Avenue, appeared in county court in Austintown on Monday on charges of grand theft and possession of criminal tools. No plea was accepted, as both charges are felonies. The charges had been filed Friday.
Maynard posted $5,000 bond to be released from jail on the two charges, only to be taken from court and placed back in jail by county probation officers, as his arrest violated terms of his probation on a previous conviction. Information about the previous conviction was not immediately available.
Austintown police arrested Maynard at about 5:30 a.m. July 7 after a short foot chase near Industrial Drive. Officers were in that area looking for two men who had tried to break into a North Meridian Road home earlier that night. A second suspect has not been found.
Reports state that after he was arrested, Maynard led police to the yards of two homes on Kirwan Drive where he had hidden stolen car stereos and CDs. Police said that during an investigation after Maynard's arrest, they tied him to three thefts from cars on Kirwan Drive, two on Collins Avenue and two on Burkey Road. The thefts had occurred July 7.
