Grant to aid program on homeownership

SHARON, Pa. -- Community Homebuyers Inc. of Mercer County, an arm of the Mercer County Housing Authority, has been awarded a state grant of $54,750 to promote family savings accounts and homeownership among low-income county residents. The authority set up the savings account program to encourage low-income people to save money for such things as buying a home, paying for education or starting up or expanding a business.
The grant money will be used to match contributions, up to $2,000 over a two-year period, made to the fund by low-income individuals .
The grant is part of a program to encourage self-sufficiency, responsibility and independence, said state Sen. Robert Robbins of Greenville, R-50th, who announced the award.
The funds come from the Pennsylvania Family Savings Account Program administered by the state Department of Commerce and Economic Development.
