Playing Toto
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Not just any dog will do. The staff at New Castle Playhouse is looking for a Cairn Terrier to appear as Toto in its production of "The Wizard of Oz" later this year. Prospective dogs should be of good temperament, able to sit on cue and tolerant of children. One dog will be needed for every performance on weekends from Nov. 19 to Dec. 5. Opera singers
Experienced singers are needed for the opera "Cavalleria Rusticana," an upcoming production by Valley Lyric Opera of Greenville, Pa., and Seraphim Chamber Orchestra and Chorus of Youngstown. Vignettes of this opera were included in the movie "The Godfather, Part III." For this concert, songs will be performed in Italian. There are openings for all voice parts. Pioneer art festival
JAMESTOWN, Pa. -- Pymatuning State Park, Route 322, will be the setting for a Pioneer Art Festival from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and next Sunday. There will be demonstrations of pioneer activities such as butter churning, blacksmithing and candlemaking. There also will be a Civil War and Indian encampment, displays by artists and crafters, wagon and buggy rides, music and entertainment, children's games and refreshments.
Open house features art by New Yorker
LISBON -- Award-winning original art by New Yorker Victor Lay will be featured at a real-estate open house and art reception from 1 to 4 p.m. next Sunday at 37181 Hunter Camp Road.
Lay worked as a courtroom sketch artist for CBS before moving to upstate New York. Besides portraits, his subjects include landscapes, still lifes and animals. This is the first time his work will be shown in Ohio.
Homeowner Patty Weiskopff is hosting the reception. From Route 45, turn at Ray Lewis Pipe Supply and drive one mile.
Dog shows and trials
CANFIELD -- The Steel Valley Cluster will present AKC All-Breed Dog Shows and Obedience Trials July 29 through Aug. 1 at Canfield Fairgrounds, with judging from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.
URegistration will be conducted from 1 to 5 p.m. July 31 for the All-Breed Match to be offered by the Beaver County Kennel Club.
UCanine Good Citizen testing will begin at 9:30 a.m. July 31 and Aug. 1.
UA Puppy Puzzle presentation will be given by Pat Hastings at 6 p.m. July 30.
UNorthcoast Coursing Club will feature an AKC lure coursing for hound breeds July 29 and 30.
UMiami Valley Gordon Setter Club will hold an all-breed eye clinic from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.July 31.
UAKC registered handlers will conduct a junior showmanship seminar July 31.
UBreeding Dynamics will be offered by Debbie Lynch at 7 p.m. July 29.
