Shutouts abound as Simon event gets going in Struthers



STRUTHERS -- In the first two rounds of the James J. Simon Memorial soccer tournament contested Saturday, 17 of the 24 games ended with shutouts.
There are 24 teams participating in the high school tournament, each playing four games.
Teams are scheduled today to play twice at the two fields at Tri-County Sports Complex and at Mickler Field.
The tournament, with 12 boys teams and 12 girls teams from throughout Ohio, is being staged as a fund-raiser for the Mahoning Valley chapter of the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
The Salem High School boys blanked Warsaw Riverview, 6-0, but then fell to Hilliard Davidson White, 2-0.
The Cardinal Mooney boys defeated Chagrin Falls 3-0 in a rematch of last year Division II regional final where Mooney fell 2-0.
Mooney also tied Toledo St. Francis DeSales 1-1 on a goal by Nick Ludtz.
In the girls tournament, Ursuline defeated St. Augustine 5-0, Cardinal Mooney blanked Doylestown Chippewa 1-0 on a goal by Marisa Simon, and Fitch took a 5-4 shootout win over Chardon NDCL.
Beaumont beat Warren JFK 2-1 while Mentor Lake Catholic defeated Howland 2-0.
Two teams that participated in the Div. I girl's district tournament, Fitch and Howland, tied 1-1.
Also in the girl's event, Ursuline lost to Chippewa 4-0, JFK was blanked by Lake Catholic 5-0 and Northwestern shut out Mooney 2-0.
Today, the boys play at 8:30 and 9:45 a.m. while the girls have rounds at 11 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. The playoff round goes from 1:30 to 6 p.m.
