PA PARKS McConnell's Mill
Programs about rock climbing, as well as a junior day camp event, are scheduled for this weekend and next at McConnell's Mill State Park, near Portersville, Pa.
Who's Chopping the Trees? Participants will have an opportunity to find out what types of animals are capable of felling trees and how they do it. This hourlong event starts at 2 p.m. today at the Alpha Pass Trailhead near the Old Mill.
Atmosphere in Motion-Junior Naturalist Day Camp: The focus of this free, four-day program will be the weather, and participants will be able to set up a weather station and learn about folklore, myths and legends, as well as how to tell cloud types. This camp, part of the Youth Environmental Learning Series, is open to children ages 9 to 13 and is from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday at the Kildoo picnic area. Those interested can call Jackie Kline, park naturalist, at (724) 368-9320.
Stone Ground Grain Day: People will have a chance to taste various cookies, biscuits and breads made from stone ground grains bought locally. This event starts at noon next Sunday at the Old Mill.
Stone Ground Grains: Participants are invited at 1:30 p.m. next Sunday to come to the Mill Courtyard. There, they will be able to use a stone to grind buckwheat and will hear the history of how grains were made more than 100 years ago. The park also offers two, half-hour corn-grinding demonstrations beginning at 1 and 3 p.m., as well as two, 45-minute Historic Grist Mill Tours that start at 2 and 4 p.m. These tours delve into the history of how grain was transformed into flour.
