VIENNA -- As if it was not tough enough for Nicole Jeray to stay in contention for her first LPGA win at the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic, she had an extra goal to meet while playing for different honors in Saturday's second round.
Jeray was competing for one of five spots in the Weetabix Women's British Open in two weeks.
Of 39 players eligible for the qualifier, the top five of the group after two rounds earned qualifying spots into the season's final major in Berkshire, England.
Jeray said she was thinking about it coming down the stretch.
"I was looking at the names up there in the top eight, and I thought if I get to [2-under], I think I will qualify," she said.
Jeray, who started on the 10th hole, used birdies on the third and sixth holes to break away from a group at 1-over and then sealed her qualification with a great tee shot and birdie on the ninth hole to finish the second round at 2-under for the tournament.
Hung qualifies
Rookie Amy Hung also made a run Saturday and took it down to the last minute to qualify. In the thick of that race at 1-over, Hung birdied her final two holes to finish at 1-under.
& quot;I made a lot of birdies, but I had plenty of bogeys also," Hung said, laughing. "I putted well today."
Both Angela Jerman and Mikaela Parmlid came into Saturday's round in the top 10 of the standings. Both played themselves into the top five during the morning, but then the waiting began.
"Now, I'm going to go in and find out what everybody shot," Jerman said after finishing her round. "Then I'm probably going to follow it on the computer."
Eventually, the waiting turned into relief as the both found out they had qualified when the final groups finally finished their second rounds shortly before 9 p.m.
After shooting a 1-over 73 for the first round, Jerman, who is in her second year on tour, dropped back to 3-over after bogeying the second and fourth holes. But she had consecutive birdies on seven and eight before pulling back to even par for the tournament on 15th.
Jerman said her par saves were the key to her round.
"I made some really key par putts," she said. "It was a little bit of an up-and-down day, but overall, it was solid."
Parmlid, a 23-year old rookie from Gothenburg, Sweden, also shot a 1-under 71 to pull up to even par. She used 15 pars to remain in contention for the qualifier and for the tournament.
"I'm trying to not think about it," Parmlid said of the qualifying. "But the British Open qualifying is definitely very important."
Mardi Lunn shot a 1-under 71 on Saturday to finish at even par to round out the qualifiers.
