Holistic treatment battles allergies

NAET is an alternative to shots or pills that seems to work for some.

A Brazil nut made a believer out of John Chianese.
When a friend died in 1997, Chianese inherited his books and vials on NAET, a holistic method for allergy elimination.
Chianese, a massage therapist, and co-director of Massage Therapy Center of Northeast Ohio, Inc., acknowledges he knew nothing about Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Techniques and was skeptical.
"I started reading the books and experimenting with friends and family just for fun, and to my amazement, I saw results," Chianese said.
But he still wasn't persuaded enough to treat himself for severe Brazil nut allergies, which had landed him in the hospital.
"I had a friend who was equally allergic to shellfish, and equally skeptical," Chianese said. "We finally made a deal that if she would eat a shrimp, I would eat a nut. We were both treated, we both ate, and neither of us reacted to our previous allergy. That's when I decided to pursue certification in NAET and add it to my practice."
By 2001, he had his certification.
The approach
Chianese had studied massage and shiatsu at the Swedish Institute School of Massage Therapy in New York City. Shiatsu is a type of Japanese massage, which, like acupuncture, utilizes what is known in Oriental medicine as the "meridians," pathways through the body where it is believed our vital energy flows.
Allergy, in these terms, refers to any disturbance which blocks this flow of energy. Chianese's training gave him a head start in understanding the concept of NAET, which is also based on the meridians.
Dr. Devi Nambudripad, creator of NAET, was an allergy sufferer most of her life. During a severe reaction to carrot, she found that when her husband inserted acupuncture needles in her while she held the carrot, she was suddenly no longer allergic. Using her knowledge as a doctor of Oriental medicine and acupuncture, she developed a simple technique. She has used it to treat nearly every disease, including mental and emotional illnesses.
Chianese said he has had success particularly with food allergies, psoriasis, and infertility. No one really knows why NAET works.
"I admit this is not a panacea," Chianese said, "and as yet unscientific and unproven from a Western medical standpoint, but most of my clients are pleased with the results."
Patti Peters of Suffield, a client who was treated with NAET, said three visits left her with "more energy than I had in months."
Related illnesses
Dr. Luke Lukasko of Newton Falls Animal Hospital took his autistic son, Joey, for treatments with John after reading Nambudripad's book, "Say Goodbye to Allergy Related Autism." Joey also suffered from numerous food allergies and digestive disorders.
"I like NAET because it is noninvasive, not painful, and anyone can be treated no matter how nervous they are," Lukasko said. "Joey was easy to treat because there was nothing for him to be scared of. The treatment made him calmer, and he was able to eat many more foods and reach a normal weight."
Because Dr. Lukasko was so impressed with Joey's improvement, he went on to become certified in NAET to use in his veterinary practice.
