CAMPUS NOTES | In the spotlight



UNIVERSITY OF AKRON
Two local students were among those receiving awards during the College of Engineering's annual honors and awards banquet.
Jennie Saviers of McDonald was awarded a Duane R. Keller Award in Civil Engineering and Adam Wytko of Newton Falls was awarded a Thomas M. Brittain Award in Mechanical Engineering.
Sam Henderson of Canfield is a member of the mechanical engineering team that placed seventh out of 134 teams in the Society of Automotive Engineers' international collegiate design competition.
The Formula SAE annual race car design event challenges students to design and build a formula-style race car.
COLLEGE OF WOOSTER
Recent graduate Holly Duff of Cortland has been elected to the Phi Beta Kappa national undergraduate honor society. Admission criteria include high grade point average, success across a range of liberal arts disciplines and independent study performance.
A psychology major, Duff is a graduate of Lakeview High School.
ST. JOHN'S UNIVERSITY, Queens, N.Y.
Childhood education major Michelle Nespeca of Poland is the recipient of the Mary Angela DiGiovanni Beacon of Light Award presented by the After-School All-Stars Organization. The award was presented to Michelle based on her personal accomplishments, community service and leadership qualities. Through the university's School of Education and Human Services, Nespeca is involved in the America Reads and Teacher Opportunity Corps programs, in which she mentors and tutors elementary school pupils. She is a member of the Education Society, serves as co-vice president of Kappa Delta Pi Phi Eta Sigma, the International Education Honors Society, and is a member of Phi Sigma Sigma Sorority and the mixed chorus and has participated in charity events.
YOUNGSTOWN STATE UNIVERSITY
Senior geography major Jennifer M. Mitchell, daughter of Jim and Mary Mitchell, is the Outstanding Geography Major for the 2003-04 school year. She also was recently inducted into the Alpha Kappa Mu and Omicron Delta Kappa honor societies.
Mike Craig of Hubbard has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship through Chick-fil-A restaurant. The computer information systems major is an employee at the Boardman location.
The YSU Association of Classified Employees has awarded Student Employee Scholarships to Julie Moser, a student employee in YSU's computer center, and Jennifer Fisher, who works in the dean's office of the Rayen College of Engineering and Technology. The $250 award is based on financial need and academic standing, and recipients were required to submit a written essay and recommendations from two current ACE members.
CASE WESTERN RESERVE UNIVERSITY, Cleveland
Boardman High graduate Jeffrey Kidd has been awarded a Goldwater Scholarship for the 2004-05 academic year, which provides opportunities for American undergraduate students with strong academic records and outstanding potential. The foundation awards up to 300 scholarships annually. Kidd is a biology major interested in computational genomics. He is the son of Tom and Lynn Kidd.
GROVE CITY COLLEGE, Grove City, Pa.
Senior Meredith Deichler of Lisbon was recently inducted into the Beta Mu circle of Omicron Delta Kappa. The group recognizes juniors and seniors for their outstanding leadership in areas such as social service, religious activities and athletics. Deichler also was inducted into Scroll and Key, which is the highest academic award given by the college.
Senior Andrew McLaughlin of Salem was recently given the Robert H. Sisler Memorial Award. The award was presented by the national foreign language honorary Alpha Mu Gamma to a senior who has demonstrated a concern for others, leadership and academic excellence.
MIAMI UNIVERSITY, Oxford
Jasmine Pagan of Campbell, Patrick Alexander of Youngstown and Katherine Echement of Youngstown were recently selected as Undergraduate Summer Scholars. Pagan will conduct a research project in microbiology with a faculty mentor. Alexander will conduct a research project on black culture with a faculty mentor. Echement will conduct a zoology project with a faculty mentor. Summer Scholars receive a $2,500 stipend, 12 hours of academic credit and a tuition waiver.
AUSTIN PEAY STATE UNIVERSITY, Clarksville, Tenn.
Debra S. Gibson, daughter of Russell and Nancy Brown of Youngstown, has received a President's Community College scholarship. A graduate of Volunteer State Community College, she plans to major in theater at the university. Gibson was a member of Phi Theta Kappa and Delta Psi Omega.
