AROUND THE HORN | Friday's other games
AMERICAN LEAGUE
Tigers 8, Yankees 0
DETROIT -- Mike Maroth pitched a one-hitter, Ivan Rodriguez had a two-run double in a five-run fifth and the Detroit Tigers matched their win total from last season. Gary Sheffield's double in the fourth was the lone hit against Maroth, and Sheffield was the only Yankees base-runner to reach second. The Tigers (43-46) already have as many wins as they did last season when they lost an AL-record 119 games, one short of the post-1900 futility mark.
Devil Rays 2, Orioles 0
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- John Halama allowed three hits over eight innings to help the Tampa Bay Devil Rays stop a five-game losing streak. Rocco Baldelli hit an RBI double with two outs in the third inning and scored on Aubrey Huff's single. Halama (5-3) was scheduled to start Sunday, but was moved up after Mark Hendrickson felt neck stiffness Thursday. Halama struck out three and retired 12 straight after allowing consecutive one-out singles to Rafael Palmeiro and David Newhan in the second.
Rangers 11, Blue Jays 2
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Ryan Drese (5-5) pitched into the eighth, allowing just one earned run. He has all of his wins at home, where his 1.91 ERA is the second-best in the AL behind Oakland's Tim Hudson. He left after Dave Berg's leadoff single in the eighth. Alfonso Soriano, the All-Star game MVP, had a two-run homer and a pair of RBI singles, and Laynce Nix went 4-for-4 with a two-run homer.
Royals 12, Twins 3
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Dee Brown hit a grand slam and Desi Relaford a two-run shot in the third inning. Brown hit his second career grand slam off Brad Radke (5-6) in the six-run third. He had an RBI single off Joe Roa with the bases full in the four-run fourth and struck out against Grant Balfour with two out and the bases loaded in the fifth. He finished with a career-high five RBIs.
Athletics 5, White Sox 1
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Barry Zito pitched seven strong innings for his first win in seven starts, and Jermaine Dye hit a three-run homer. Dye had three hits and Marco Scutaro had an RBI double for the A's, who beat Chicago at the Coliseum for the 15th time in 16 games. Oakland has won 22 of its last 25 at home overall.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Phillies 5, Mets 1
NEW YORK -- Jim Thome hit his major league-leading 29th home run, and Kevin Millwood pitched three-hit ball for seven innings. Bobby Abreu also homered and drove in two runs for the Phillies, who bounced back from an 11-inning loss in the opener of the four-game series. Thome finished with three RBIs, and Jimmy Rollins stole two bases.
Padres 5, Astros 1
HOUSTON -- Phil Garner opened his tenure as manager of the Houston Astros with a loss. Mark Loretta's three-run double backed Jake Peavy, who sent Andy Pettitte to his third straight loss. Garner, who managed Milwaukee and Detroit to a combined 708-802 record during parts of 11 seasons, replaced Jimy Williams on Wednesday, the day after Houston hosted the All-Star game. Houston dropped a season-high 12 games behind NL Central-leading St. Louis, which has won 10 of 11 games.
Cardinals 7, Reds 5
CINCINNATI -- Pinch-hitter Marlon Anderson hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning off Cincinnati closer Danny Graves, the major leagues saves leader with 33. Reggie Sanders hit a two-run single off Graves (1-4) to make it 5-4 before Anderson's blast. It was Graves' eighth blown save in 41 opportunities.
Brewers 3, Cubs 2
CHICAGO -- Pinch-hitter Brooks Kieschnick singled in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning. Victor Santos (9-3) allowed four hits and two runs in six innings to win for the seventh time in his last eight decisions. Dan Kolb pitched a perfect ninth for his 27th save.
