Trustees to focus on accident issues



EMS volunteers were summoned, but didn't go to a Petersburg wreck.
NEW SPRINGFIELD -- Springfield Township Trustee Reed Metzka said a meeting will be set to sort out issues that arose after the township ambulance failed to respond to a minor traffic accident in Petersburg on Friday.
The EMS volunteers scheduled for the shift failed to respond when tones were set off to summon them.
East Palestine and Beaver Township, who have a mutual aid agreement with the township, ended up transporting the victims to the hospital.
Also Wednesday, trustees agreed to buy 12 new Motorola pagers at $445 apiece from Youngstown Radio, Youngstown. Fire Chief Brian Hughes said that the new pagers will replace some which are obsolete and for which no replacement parts are available. He said it will also make it possible to give pagers to some department members who don't have them.
Trustees also approved spending $5,148 to send four firefighters to a New Jersey fire instructor school. The cost covers the class, lodging, transportation and meals.

UPolice Chief Matthew Mohn announced that the family of the late Larry and Mary Ann Osborn has contributed $700 to the police, fire and EMS services.
UBrandon Ceritellie of New Middletown was accepted as a member of the fire department.
UOn the advice of the Mahoning County prosecutor, who provides legal counsel to the township, trustees rescinded last month's action in which they agreed to pay $3,426 in unpaid accrued benefits to the estate of the late township clerk Shirley Casity, with the stipulation that her estate not bring any more claims against the township. The stipulation is not allowed, and trustees passed the motion to pay the sum without any stipulations.
UTrustees lowered the speed limit to 25 miles per hour in Ginger Hill Estates. There was no posted speed limit previously, and motorists could go 55 miles per hour.
UTrustees learned that a $3,003 grant was awarded the township from Mahoning County Solid Waste for fencing of the pond at the high school and for work at the Petersburg Fire Station.
UTrustees paid $4,355 to McCambridge Plumbing, New Middletown, for repair and replacement of the drain in the EMS and police bays.
UTrustees paid Poland Concrete $1,180 for concrete barriers used to close Harman Road after recent flooding.
UTrustees also accepted the resignation of Jennifer Dimmantes as substitute recycling coordinator.
