GIRARD -- Three Girard teenage runaways were taken into custody early today in northeastern Georgia.
The three fled Saturday with Breadon Clare, 20, of Tod Lane, Youngstown, who faced a local arson charge. The runaways are Allison Foster, 17, and her brother, Jeffrey Foster, 15, both of Washington Avenue, and Anthony Tyler Owens, 15, of North Highland Avenue.
Clare and the teenagers were taken into custody by police in Anniston, Ga., located east of Birmingham and south of Gadsden.
Capt. Rick Sanford of the Anniston Police Department said Clare's white Honda Accord was stopped by police there about 4 a.m. He said the car's bumper was dragging along the road surface, causing sparks.
Girard police Capt. Frank Bigowsky said that it appeared Clare was released because the warrant charging him with interference of parental custody was not entered into the computer.
Sanford said, however, that the incident report shows Clare was released after Girard police declined to extradite him. Bigowsky noted that Girard police could not extradite because the warrant was only in effect for Ohio. Nationwide warrants are only for those who commit violent crimes.
The teens are being held in the Coosa Valley Regional Detention Center, a juvenile lockup in Anniston.
"It appears everybody is in good health," Bigowsky said today.
Returning to the Valley
Tom Wright, chief probation officer at the Calhoun County Juvenile Court, said the Fosters can be released, but Owens' status isn't clear because there is a probation violation against him.
Bigowsky said juvenile authorities are apparently making arrangements to fly the three to the Trumbull County Juvenile Court.
Pamela Barrios, the Foster's mother, said this morning that she received a call from Girard police that the teenagers were in custody.
She has maintained that her daughter ran away with Clare so the two could get married in Mississippi. Barrios said she believes her son went along to look after his sister.
"He's very protective of his sister," she pointed out.
Anthony's mother, Patty Murphy, said today that the only reason he joined the others was to go on a "joy ride."
