During its Tuesday meeting, the Youngstown Board of Education:
Heard from member Lock Beachum Sr. that, beginning this fall, city school district pupils no longer will be able to get soda from vending machines in the schools. As part of an effort to encourage better diet, the machines will be stocked now only with water and fruit drinks.
Learned from member Jamel Brown, chairman of the school board's Athletics and Extracurricular Activities Committee, that his group is discussing future construction of a central athletic complex for Youngstown schools outdoor sports such as football, track and soccer. Right now, Youngstown schools athletes play varsity football at Youngstown State University's Stambaugh Stadium and other sports at various venues throughout the school district.
Approved a $67,700 contract with Lawhon & amp; Associates Inc., with offices in Columbus and Cleveland, to develop a maintenance plan for equipment that's being installed as part of the district's school construction and renovation plan.
Agreed to spend $437,100 to buy new text books from various publishers.
