Dead Kennedys resolve dispute about breaking up
Dead Kennedys resolvedispute about breaking up
SAN FRANCISCO -- Former Dead Kennedys lead singer Jello Biafra has dropped his remaining lawsuit against members of his band.
In May 2000, a jury convicted Biafra and his record label of breach of contract and fraud. In June 2003, a state appeals court upheld that decision and ordered Biafra to pay $220,000 in back royalties and other damages.
It also decided the band's creative output, including songs "Holiday in Cambodia" and "Kill the Poor," belongs to a partnership formed among the four band members.
But the panel reversed the lower court's decision to break up the partnership, remanding the case back to the trial court to determine whether a partnership among the band members should be dissolved and its assets sold.
On June 30, Biafra agreed "the partnership's assets would be substantially diminished" by breaking it up. A call Monday to Biafra's publicist was not immediately returned.
"Personally and professionally, I just want to put this entire chapter behind us and concentrate on making music again," bassist Klaus Flouride said.
The San Francisco-based punk band performed together from 1978 to 1986. The band re-formed without Biafra and has been playing as the Dead Kennedys, according to its publicist, Josh Mills.
Eminem gets own channel
DETROIT -- Eminem will have his own channel on satellite radio starting this fall, a major provider announced Monday.
Sirius Satellite Radio said it has teamed up with the Detroit-area rapper -- along with his label, Shady Records, and Interscope Records -- to create "a cutting-edge hip-hop music and lifestyle channel."
Shady Records' DJ Green Lantern will host a weekly show, while Eminem himself and other Shady Records artists also will host occasional shows that will include call-in segments.
The channel, which does not yet have a name, will feature hip-hop from across the spectrum, not just the two labels, the company said.
Marc Anthony agrees topay $20,000 settlement
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Marc Anthony has offered to pay an outstanding $20,000 bill at a Puerto Rican nightclub to settle a lawsuit, a spokeswoman for the singer said Monday.
Last week Anthony was sued in a Puerto Rican court by Shimmy McHugh, owner of Club Babylon at El San Juan Hotel & amp; Casino.
The lawsuit stemmed from a bill for a private party thrown after the 2002 Miss Universe pageant by Anthony and his then-wife, former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres.
The lawsuit, as reported in Primera Hora newspaper, alleged Anthony "had indicated that due to personal problems" he declined to pay the bill of $21,067.
Anthony offered to pay the full amount Thursday, spokeswoman Holly Taylor said by phone from New York.
"We do expect this matter to actually be settled quite shortly," Taylor said. "We are making every effort to resolve this, and we have not heard back from them on an acceptance yet."
She said Anthony's representatives had been "trying to resolve this for the last several months." The lawsuit was filed Wednesday.
McHugh couldn't immediately be reached for comment. The lawsuit said the party was held for about 500 people May 29, 2002.
A judge in the Dominican Republic approved a divorce June 1 for Anthony and Torres.
Anthony reportedly married Jennifer Lopez days after the divorce at her home in Beverly Hills, Calif. Anthony has declined to confirm it.
