Burglar steals tool from garage, escapes in car
AUSTINTOWN -- A Kirk Road man told police he chased a burglar out of his garage Tuesday night.
The resident said his daughter noticed the burglar coming out of the garage with a power tool about 11:50 p.m. and yelled for her father.
He then chased the burglar on foot to Darbyshire Drive, where the burglar got into a car and drove away, reports state.
Police and the resident's family unsuccessfully searched the area for the burglar's car.
Police are investigating.
Newman Center service
YOUNGSTOWN -- A prayer service for the victims of violent crime and in opposition of the death penalty will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the Youngstown State University's Newman Center, 254 Madison Ave.
The service is cosponsored by the Catholic Campus Ministry. Prayers will be offered for Stephen A. Vrabel, formerly of Struthers, who was executed today, and Scott Mink of Union, scheduled to be executed July 20.
Mill Creek Watershed ride
CANFIELD -- Bicyclists are being invited to participate in the third annual Mill Creek Watershed ride Aug. 7.
The 30-mile course, featuring scenic and rolling terrain, will go from Canfield to the headwaters of Mill Creek south of Columbiana.
This year, riders will have the option of pedaling an additional 25 miles in the Yellow Creek watershed.
The fee is $10 and includes a light lunch. Registration deadline is Aug. 5.

YMHA gets new director
YOUNGSTOWN -- Patrick B. Howard, former development specialist with the Philadelphia Housing Authority, has joined the Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority as director of development.
He will administer all development activity for YMHA, including the $19.7 million Hope VI community revitalization grant.
Howard, a captain in the Army reserve, also has been a planner for the cities of Hampton and Portsmouth, Va., and director of planning, zoning and code enforcement for Wettstown, Pa.
He received a bachelor's degree from Clemson University and a master's in public administration from Old Dominion University. Howard is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners and the National Forum for Black Public Administrators.
Columbiana hires principal
COLUMBIANA -- Columbiana Board of Education hired Tim Saxton as high school principal.
Superintendent Ron Iarussi recommended Saxton to the board Tuesday.
Saxton, 36, is a Canfield High School and Bowling Green State University graduate. He begins a two-year contract at $70,000 Aug. 2.
Saxton has been principal of Carrollton High School in Carroll County since 1999. Before that, he was assistant high school principal for two years.
Free immunization clinic
GIRARD -- A free immunization clinic will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the health department in the city building for city children only.
Parents are to provide a copy of the child's immunization record and a parent or guardian must accompany children under age 18.
Parents must pre-register by calling the health department from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at (330) 545-6048.
Prescription-drug help
HUBBARD -- A meeting about the prescription-drug assistance program in Mahoning and Trumbull counties will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hubbard Church of the Nazarene, 1815 Cherry Lane Drive.
The prescription-drug assistance program is a free service coordinated by Humility of Mary Health Partners to help qualifying senior citizens get medications used on a long-term basis.
Mahoning and Trumbull county senior citizens with no prescription-drug benefits who meet the income guidelines are eligible to apply for the program.
