Rep. Ryan chooses president of Urban League for summit

WARREN -- Thomas Conley, president and chief executive officer of the Warren-Trumbull Urban League, will attend the African-American Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C., on Thursday.
U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th, chose Conley as his representative at the summit.
The event is designed to permit black leaders throughout the country to discuss issues of importance to their communities with Democratic officials in Congress, Conley said.
Among the topics to be discussed, he said, are voting rights, education, health care, jobs, and housing.
"I'm very honored to be selected to attend this event," Conley said. "This will strengthen the relationship between African-Americans and congressional Democrats."
Each Democratic member of the U.S. House and Senate selected a representative to the conference.
"This is an opportunity to build bridges between the [Democratic] Party and African-Americans," Ryan said. "I chose Tom because he's helped solve the problem with the Warren police. He sat down and discussed the problems with the police. Those are the kind of leaders we need. He'll be a good representative."
There were complaints filed by blacks last year against Warren police about excessive force, harassment and illegal strip searches.
