NOTEBOOK | From Squaw Creek Country Club
Amateur in: Amateur Veronique Drouin, a Canadian who attends Kent State University, was one of two golfers who earned a spot in the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic this week at Monday's qualifying tournament held at Trumbull Country Club. Drouin led a three-player field by shooting a 1-under-par 71. Twelve-year tour veteran Dina Ammaccapane earned the second spot with a 5-over-par 77. Faith Egli, a Cleveland area club professional, finished third a stroke back with a 78. A fourth qualifying participant, Amy Reed, had to withdraw from the competition after six holes because of an injury.Only two: Only two LPGA players have played in all 14 previous tournaments in the Valley and are playing again this week. Two-time Giant Eagle champion Tammie Green from Somerset and native Ohioan Laurel Kean are the only two who have played in every tournament here and are back. Green is the tournament's all-time money winner with $409,696, which includes two firsts, a second, a third, fourth and fifth place finishes over the year. She has only missed the cut twice in 14 tournaments. Kean has won $27,063 in her 14 previous events here, but has missed the cut eight times. Her best finish was a tie for 13th in 2001 when she won $16,135. Two-time champion Michelle McGann has played in the last 13 straight tournaments here and is playing again this year. She didn't turn pro until 1989 and played here for the first time in 1991, missing the first year of the event.Five withdraw: Five more golfers have withdrawn from the field of the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic. Those who will not be coming are Kelly Kuehne (who was scheduled to be in today's Schewebel's Long Drive Contest), Jane Crafter, Krista Bartlett, Christina Kim and Suzann Pettersen. Moving into the field are Ann Marie Palli, Missie Berteotte, Julie Piers, Lisa Kiggens, Patty Hayes, Tina Tombs and Patty Jordan.Take day off: About 40 of the LPGA players who are playing this week at the Giant Eagle, were scheduled to take today to fly to Minnesota to play in a one-day pro-am tournament. "They're paying us $3,000 for the one day and that's just too good to pass up," said veteran LPGA player Nicole Jeray.
