HERMITAGE, Pa. -- A 4-year-old city boy was killed when he drove a four-wheel, all-terrain vehicle into a tree at his family's campsite in McKean County. Pennsylvania State Police said the accident occurred around 9:30 a.m. Sunday in Norwich Township near the town of Betula.
Colton J. Lengyel, son of Gregory and Heather Lengyel of Lori Lane, was pronounced dead of his injuries at Bradford Regional Medical Center, police said.
Police seek pair in spree of purse snatchings
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Police are looking for a man and woman involved in an overnight purse-snatching spree. Authorities said purses were taken Monday in New Castle, Neshannock, Union and Shenango townships.
New Castle Police said the purse of a 67-year-old woman was snatched in the parking lot of Jameson South on South Mercer Street at 11:29 p.m. Monday. Witnesses said they saw a white man about 6 foot tall getting into a blue Geo Metro.
A man fitting that same description was seen at a purse snatching at Shop 'N' Save in Union Township, police there said. Police said a woman also was in the car.
Details of the other purse snatchings were not available from Neshannock and Shenango police.
Economic development director to leave Sharon
SHARON, Pa. -- The city is losing its economic development director.
Rosette Fisher, who has worked in the city's Community Development Department for 24 years, is taking early retirement Aug. 20.
She and her husband are moving to Myrtle Beach, S.C., where he is taking a job with that city, she said. Fisher said she is contemplating at a new career in real estate.
She was in her third year as executive director of the development department and served as deputy director for 13 years before that.
Benefit for Red Cross
SALEM -- A pancake breakfast sponsored by the American Red Cross of North Columbiana County will be from 7 a.m. to noon Saturday at St. Paul School gymnasium, 925 E. State St.
Pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, coffee, milk and juice will be served continuously by Red Cross Volunteers.
Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children in advance from Red Cross volunteers or at the door. Proceeds benefit Red Cross emergency services, including education in Columbiana and Mahoning counties.
Fire department day
EAST PALESTINE -- Area firefighters are invited to attend the East Palestine Fire Department Field Day at 10 a.m. July 24 at the city park.
Events include water battles, hose relays, bucket brigades, tugs-of-war and a steak fry. Competition is in three-person teams.
Cost is $15 per person, or $10 for the steak fry only. Paid registration must be turned in to the East Palestine police and fire dispatch center by Saturday.
Mammograms offered
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Breast Care Center's mobile mammography unit, the MammoVan, will be on the Youngstown State University campus from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 19 at the corner of University Avenue and Elm Street.
The MammoVan is equipped with private changing rooms. Female technologists will perform low-dose mammograms.
All forms of insurance are accepted. Appointments can be scheduled by calling (330) 941-3489.
Fireworks honor
LOWELLVILLE -- The fireworks display at the conclusion of this year's Mount Carmel Club Festival will honor fireworks pioneer George Zambelli with an extended grand finale tribute, "This One's for You, George."
Zambelli, who died in December, was owner and president of Zambelli Fireworks Internationale. New Castle, Pa.-based Zambelli Fireworks, founded in 1893, is one of the oldest fireworks companies in the United States.
The fireworks show will begin at 11:45 p.m. Saturday.
