SHOOTING Man injures 2 during police chase gunbattle

Police shot the suspect after he crashed his vehicle in a residential area.
COLUMBUS (AP) -- A man armed with an assault rifle led police on a chase Sunday night, firing shots at homes and parked cars, and wounding an officer and a woman inside her home, authorities said.
The suspect, whose name was not released, was shot by police after crashing his vehicle into a parked car in a residential area, Columbus police spokesman Sgt. Brent Mull said.
The suspect was in critical, but nonlife threatening condition early today, police said in a news release.
One officer was injured during the gun battle and was treated at a hospital and released. A woman suffered a minor wound to her neck when the suspect shot her house and was in good condition, police said.
What happened
The events began after officers responding to a report of two people shot on the city's west side were given a description of the suspect, Mull said. The suspect was later spotted as he drove north on Interstate 71.
"During the pursuit, we had a sergeant attempt to throw out road spikes, and at that time, the suspect brandished an assault rifle and started shooting out his window at the sergeant," Mull said. The sergeant was not hurt.
The suspect continued shooting at officers while driving on the interstate. He fired at homes and parked cars after exiting the interstate and entering a tree-lined residential area, Mull said.
The suspect didn't attempt to flee after crashing, Mull said.
"He trained his weapon on officers after exiting his car," Mull said. He said he didn't know how many times the suspect was shot.
News footage showed the suspect's black Jeep Cherokee riddled with bullet holes, with all of the windows and the back windshield shot out.
The original two shooting victims were taken to a hospital in fair condition, Mull said.
