YOUNGSTOWN -- After a car with two occupants was struck by more than 100 birdshot pellets from 12-gauge shotgun Saturday afternoon, police arrested Gregory Weidner, 17, of Tacoma Avenue on a charge of felonious assault. The victims said Weidner fired at them from a porch on Elm Street.
Five spent shotgun shells were collected from the scene. The shots shattered the windshield, narrowly missing the driver's head, police said. Weidner was chased through rear yards and caught on the porch of his residence. He was taken to the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center.
Festival to close street
LOWELLVILLE -- Washington Street will be closed Tuesday through Sunday between McGaffney and Jackson streets because of the Mount Carmel Club Festival, which runs Wednesday through Saturday.
Northbound traffic will be detoured west on Jackson Street to Howard, Monroe or Smith streets.
Southbound traffic will be detoured to McGaffney to Lowellville Road to U.S. Route 224 or River Road.
Board to meet Tuesday
YOUNGSTOWN -- Eagle Heights Academy Board of Education meeting will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the school's auditorium, 1833 Market St.
Taste of the Valley set
LIBERTY -- Second Harvest Food Bank's 13th annual Taste of the Valley 2004 fund-raiser is from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 1 at Holiday Inn MetroPlex, at which 35 area restaurants will present food and beverages. In addition, there is a silent auction for items that include gift baskets, a weekend get-away, and a week at a condominium in Florida. The cost of corporate tables for four begin at $300, and individual tickets are $60. All proceeds benefit Second Harvest, which provides food to 200 hunger-relief organizations in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties. For tickets or more information, call (330) 792-5522.
Help for storm damage
COLUMBUS -- If your property was damaged during the recent storms, the Ohio Department of Taxation wants to know. Property owners can apply for a reduction in the assessed value of their property if it was damaged in a storm or other natural disaster. For information go to tax.ohio.gov.
The application is due Dec. 31 if the damage has taken place between last January and September. If it happens from October through December, the paperwork is due Jan. 31. All paperwork can be picked up and turned in with the county auditor.
Civil War re-enactment
CANFIELD -- A Civil War re-enactment will be July 24 and 25 at Argus Park off Shields Road. The event, sponsored by the Masonic Lodge at Argus Park, will include demonstrations of Civil War-era cooking and tactical maneuvers and battle re-enactments. Gates will open to the public at 9 a.m. July 24 and 10 a.m. July 25.
