BOXING Undefeated Hanshaw to fight Maciel in Canton
CANTON -- Warren native Tony Hanshaw will be in the 10-round main event at the Canton Memorial Civic Center Friday night, part of a six-bout card promoted by Don Chargin.
Hanshaw (17-0, 12 knockouts), now of Mansfield, will be in his third fight in four months after a 15-month layoff. His opponent in a super middleweight matchup will be Victor Maciel (5-5-1, 5 KOs) from Huatabampo, Mexico.
In November 1994, Maciel had a second-round knockout of Pedro Ortega, who was stopped by Kelly Pavlik in Struthers on July 2.
With the Pavlik and Hanshaw camps looking toward a possible matchup, how Hanshaw fares with the hard-punching Maciel could have meaning toward that goal.
Hanshaw, who stopped Kevin Butts in the second round at Gund Arena in April and Tyrus Armstead in the third round in Chicago in May, was at Pavlik's victory over Ortega.
Top Rank watching
Bruce Trampler, the matchmaker for Top Rank Inc., hinted that a Pavlik-Hanshaw fight would be a natural. What gives such a bout more significance is that Hanshaw won a controversial decision over Pavlik in the 2000 Olympic trials.
"After my layoff It has been one fight at a time for me and whatever my promotional people decide I will go along with, but I also feel it is time to move up the ladder and begin to have some better money fights," said Hanshaw, who is trained by John Russell.
Russell said, "Tony is back at work and in the best shape of his boxing life so I feel he is capable of beating any opponent he faces."
The Hanshaw-Maciel fight will be televised by the Telefutura network.
