NEW YORK -- Making a surprise start in place of an ailing Mike Mussina, Orlando Hernandez (1-0) held Tampa Bay to two runs and five hits over five innings in his first major league appearance since 2002. He struck out five and walked three, throwing 51 of his 88 pitches for strikes, as the Yankees completed a four-game sweep. Tony Clark hit two of New York's five homers, and Jorge Posada homered and drove in two runs before leaving with a sprained ankle. Hideki Matsui and Gary Sheffield also connected. Aubrey Huff homered and Hall had three hits and two RBIs for the Devil Rays, who scored only 11 runs in the series.
Rangers 6, Red Sox 5
BOSTON -- Eric Young went 5-for-5 and Alfonso Soriano homered and had a tie-breaking sacrifice fly off Keith Foulke (2-2) in the eighth inning as Texas snapped Boston's five-game winning streak. Kevin Mench and Mark Teixeira also homered for the Rangers. Doug Mirabelli and Johnny Damon hit back-to-back homers off Frank Francisco in the seventh as Boston rallied from a 5-2 deficit to tie it.
White Sox 4, Mariners 3
CHICAGO -- Freddy Garcia struck out seven in 62/3 innings against his former team, Jose Valentin hit a two-run homer and the White Sox handed Seattle its ninth straight loss. Aaron Rowand and Juan Uribe both hit solo homers for Chicago, which won its fourth straight to overtake Minnesota for first place in the AL Central. Garcia (6-8) was traded to Chicago on June 27 and is 2-1 in three starts. He allowed three runs on six hits and gave up one walk.
Angels 5, Blue Jays 2
TORONTO -- Adam Kennedy fell a home run shy of the cycle and Anaheim completed a three-game sweep of Toronto. Kennedy went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI for the Angels. John Lackey (7-8) improved to 4-1 in his last seven starts, allowing two runs on six hits in 52/3 innings. He struck out five and didn't walk a batter.
Tigers 2, Twins 0
MINNEAPOLIS -- Jason Johnson pitched a five-hitter and struck out a career-high 11 to lead Detroit. Johnson (7-7) threw his fourth career complete game, first by shutout. He threw 119 pitches -- 84 for strikes -- and walked one. Eric Munson hit a two-run homer in the second inning, the only mistake by Minnesota's Johan Santana, who reached double-digit strikeouts for the fifth straight start. Santana (7-6) fanned 11 in eight innings.
Royals 11, Orioles 7
BALTIMORE -- Mike Sweeney had two homers and three RBIs, keying a 17-hit attack for Kansas City. Jimmy Gobble (5-6) pitched six innings of six-hit ball for the Royals, who have lost 14 of 17. All three victories during the span were against the Orioles.

Reds 9, Brewers 6
MILWAUKEE -- Jason LaRue hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the ninth inning and Wily Mo Pena followed with his second of the game. Pena went 4-for-5 with three RBIs in place of the injured Ken Griffey Jr., who was placed on the 15-day disabled list before the game with a torn right hamstring. Todd Jones (7-2) got the win after pitching two-thirds of an inning. Danny Graves pitched the ninth for his 33rd save.
Braves 6, Phillies 4
PHILADELPHIA -- Julio Franco hit a three-run home run and J.D. Drew had four hits, including a homer for Atlanta, who took two of three to pull within a game of first-place Philadelphia. Russ Ortiz (10-6) allowed four runs on six hits, while walking five in 52/3 innings for Atlanta, which has won 12 of 15 overall. John Smoltz worked a perfect eighth then allowed the first two batters to reach in the ninth before finishing for his 16th save.
Marlins 5, Mets 2
MIAMI -- Jeff Conine snapped a slump with a grand slam for Florida, helping Dontrelle Willis beat New York for the fifth time in as many tries. Conine ended a 3-for-34 skid and broke up a scoreless tie with his sixth career grand slam in the third inning off Al Leiter (5-3). Willis (7-5) allowed two runs in 61/3 innings. His ERA in five career starts against New York rose to 1.05 from 0.64. Armando Benitez pitched a perfect ninth for his 30th save.
Padres 4, Rockies 2
SAN DIEGO -- Ryan Klesko hit a home run and All-Star Mark Loretta also connected for San Diego, which snapped a four-game losing streak. Ismael Valdez (8-5) went five innings, allowing one run and six hits while walking four and striking out none. Trevor Hoffman pitched a perfect ninth for his 23rd save.
Giants 9, Diamondbacks 2
SAN FRANCISCO -- Jason Schmidt won his 11th consecutive decision, the longest streak by a Giants pitcher in 42 years, and San Francisco won for the fourth time in five games. Schmidt (11-2) allowed two runs and five hits in eight innings, and hasn't lost since April 26 -- a span of 15 starts. Jack Sanford won 11 straight for the Giants in 1962.
Dodgers 7, Astros 4
LOS ANGELES -- Paul Lo Duca hit his first career grand slam, and Jose Lima (8-3) pitched six innings for Los Angeles. Jose Hernandez hit a go-ahead RBI single in the sixth for the Dodgers. The Dodgers snapped a four-game winning streak by Roy Oswalt (8-7).
Cubs 8, Cardinals 4
ST. LOUIS -- Kerry Wood won in his first start in two months and Sammy Sosa homered and drove in five runs. Wood (4-3), sidelined since May 11 with triceps tendinitis, gave up one run and three hits in five innings with five strikeouts and two walks.
