LONG ISLAND NEWSDAY
Just when we all figured out how to tell the difference between Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen or Jessica and Ashlee Simpson, a whole new crop of teenage girls is now running around pop culture to confuse everyone.
We are here to help. Here's a handy guide to keeping 2004's girls of summer straight when you're pressed to discuss them with teen relatives or leering guys:
Diana DeGarmo, 16, American Idol-ette: The one who will likely have the No. 1 single in America this week with "Dreams." The "American Idol" season three runner-up with the perky personality and the big voice is on tour with her fellow finalists through the summer.
Hilary Duff, 16, busy "Lizzie": The one who has parlayed her starring role as "Lizzie McGuire" into big-time movie roles, like the new "A Cinderella Story," and a recording career. Duff, who has a hit with her 19-year-old sis, Haylie, on a revamped "Our Lips Are Sealed," will take a break from making movies for her first headlining tour this summer.
JoJo, 13, baby Britney: The one who shocked music industry watchers when her album "JoJo" debuted at No. 4 -- thanks to her mega-hit "Leave (Get Out)" and the Spears-ish video that's now an MTV "TRL" staple.
Maria Sharapova, 17, champion charmer: The one who upset Serena Williams in the Wimbledon finals to win tennis' most coveted prize. The win puts to rest the comparisons to another blonde, leggy Russian teen sensation Anna Kournikova, who became better known for her looks off the court than on.
Skye Sweetnam, 16, new millennium Blondie: The one who covers "Heart of Glass" on her new "Noise From the Basement" album. The first single, "Tangled Up in Me," is already climbing the charts, though Skye is working on changing her summer plans. She was originally supposed to open for Britney Spears' now-defunct summer tour.
