Motorcyclist dies
YOUNGSTOWN -- A man was killed in a one-vehicle motorcycle accident on I-680 Saturday afternoon. According to police, the man, whose name has not been released, was traveling south about 5 p.m. when he went across the median and was thrown from the motorcycle. The motorcycle skidded about 100 feet in the northbound lane. Officers are unsure what caused the accident.
Silica Road closing
AUSTINTOWN -- Silica Road at state Route 46 will be closed from Monday to July 19 so the A.P. O'Horo Co. of Liberty can widen the road. Traffic will be detoured along Silica and Victoria roads, Mahoning Avenue and Route 46.
Mock Road will close
BERLIN CENTER -- Mock Road between Bedell Road and state Route 534 (Pricetown Road) in Berlin Township will be closed from Tuesday through Thursday for culvert replacements. Traffic will be detoured along Route 534 and Shilling and Bedell roads.
Military voters
LISBON -- The Columbiana County Board of Elections is asking for assistance to help military personnel vote by absentee ballot in a timely manner for the Nov. 2 general election. The board is asking the families of military personnel to remind their family members to mail a completed and signed Federal Post Card Application to the elections board, at 41 North Park Ave., Lisbon 44432, as soon as possible. The application is both an automatic voter registration form and an application for an absentee ballot for military personnel and their spouses. It is available at any military installation in or outside the United States. Once the post cards are received and certified, the elections board will mail absentee ballots. Out-of-country ballots must be postmarked no later than Nov. 2 and be in the elections board office no later than Nov. 12 to be counted.
Austintown burglaries
AUSTINTOWN -- Police are investigating two unrelated reports of burglaries of township businesses late Wednesday or early Thursday. On Thursday, police received a call from a Youngstown police officer who said he had noticed a broken window at the Cornersburg Party Shop on Canfield Road.
When police arrived, they found that someone had thrown a piece of concrete through the window, entered the shop, and stolen cartons of cigarettes. Police also received a call Thursday that someone had broken into Pizza Hut on Mahoning Avenue, stolen cash and damaged the jukebox.
Electric scooter stolen
AUSTINTOWN -- Police are investigating a report that two men stole an electric scooter Thursday afternoon from outside Kar Maxx on South Raccoon Road. A woman told the owner of Kar Maxx that two men took the scooter from in front of the business about 4 p.m., loaded it into a car and drove away, reports state. The scooter is worth about $400.
Facing gun charge
AUSTINTOWN -- A Youngstown man accused of having a loaded revolver in a car he was riding in is set to appear Monday in Mahoning County Court here.
Stephon Jarvie, 23, of Oak Hill Avenue, is charged with carrying a concealed weapon. Officers said they stopped the car Jarvie was riding in on Mahoning Avenue, found the gun under a seat, and arrested him.
Inmate dies
MERCER, Pa. -- An inmate of the State Regional Correctional Facility in nearby Findley Township has died, apparently of a heart attack. Superintendent Joseph F. Desuta said Willie Turner, 57, was pronounced dead at 8:35 p.m. Thursday at United Community Hospital in Grove City. Preliminary cause of death was listed as cardiac respiratory arrest, he said. Turner was serving one to two years for a 2004 violation of an intermediate punishment from Warren County.
Tests awaited in death
ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. -- Authorities are waiting for toxicology tests to determine how a 47-year-old New Castle man died. Ellwood City Police said the man was found dead at 3 p.m. Thursday in a home on the 500 block of Glen Avenue. Lawrence County Coroner Russell Noga said the man was identified as Joseph Buchman of Marshall Avenue. An autopsy was performed Friday morning at the Ellwood City Hospital, Noga said.
