Church honors St. Anne
YOUNGSTOWN -- Our Lady of Hungary Church & amp; Holy Name Church will have a communal service to anoint the sick and elderly at 1:30 p.m. July 26 in the Cardinal Mindszenty Hall at 545 N. Belle Vista Ave. The service is in honor of St. Anne, patron of grandparents. Light refreshments will be served after the service. The hall is accessible by wheelchair.
Group talks education
YOUNGSTOWN -- Union Baptist Church, 528 Lincoln Ave., is expecting 500 people to attend the Congress of Christian Education it will be hosting Monday through Friday. The theme will be "Effective Ministry in the Emerging Millennium." The congress will open at 7 p.m. Monday with a districtwide meeting. There will be worship services at 7 every night. Various classes are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. and from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and worship from 11 a.m. to noon. Dr. George Waddles, national dean, will speak at the Sister Pearlene Bennett luncheon at noon Friday. Tickets are $25. The district congress includes eastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia.
Council officials elected
YOUNGSTOWN -- Atty. Alan R. Kretzer was elected to a two-year term as president of the Jewish Community Relations Council. Other Jewish Community Relations Council officers elected were Atty. Martin Hume and Rabbi Joseph Schonberger, vice presidents; Ronald Kessler, secretary; and Dr. Bettina Clebone, Scott Lewis, Nancy Wagner and Sherry Weinblatt, at-large officers. Bruce Lev is immediate past president. Kretzer, an attorney for more than 35 years, has served as the council's vice president and is the immediate past president of Congregation Rodef Sholom. He also is founder and president of Community Corrections Association Inc. from 1973 to 1983, a past president of the Mahoning County Bar Association and the Western Reserve Transit Authority. He has been president of the Mahoning County Law Library Association since 1985. Kretzer was special counsel to the attorney general of Ohio for Youngstown State University from 1983 to 1995. The council is the public affairs department of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation and represents communities in Mahoning and Trumbull counties and the Shenango Valley.

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- "It's Time," a conference presented by People of the City ... Arise and sponsored by Living Word Christian Center, 21 S. Group plans to pray
YOUNGSTOWN -- Catholic Campus Ministry at Youngstown State University and the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown Office of Pro-Life Activities will sponsor an evening of reflection and prayer for victims of violence and for an end to the death penalty from 7 to 8:30 July 19 at YSU's Newman Center, 254 Madison Ave. After prayer, participants will view and discuss the video "Talking About the Death Penalty." The U.S. Catholic Bishops spoke out against the use of capital punishment and favor life in prison without the possibility of parole in their recent statement on the criminal justice system.
Bishop brings message
COLUMBIANA -- Bishop Marcus Miller of the Northeastern Ohio Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America will be visiting Jerusalem Lutheran Church, 415 S. Main St., at 9:30 a.m.Sunday.
