WARREN -- Trumbull County commissioners awarded a $20,500 contract to Environmental Service and Construction, L.L.C. of Youngstown to remove toxic mold from the basement of the county health department building on Chestnut Avenue.
The basement contained offices and a meeting room. It has been sealed since the mold was discovered two years ago. The contract does not include reconstruction of walls that will be partially removed.
Thursday, commissioners also voted to seek proposals from architects to prepare plans to remodel the building, which is expected to cost in excess of $250,000.
Awarded pact for trail
WARREN -- Shelly & amp; Sands Inc. of Akron has been awarded a $927,000 contract by Trumbull County commissioners to construct the next phase of the Western Reserve Greenway bike trail in Trumbull County.
This summer, the company will continue the trail north from Hyde Oakfield Road in Bristol Township, 6.25 miles to the county line. No local funds will be used, officials say. There, it will link with a section of the trail under construction in Ashtabula County. Plans call for the trail to eventually extend from Lake Erie to the Ohio River.
Filling vacancy on board
HOWLAND -- The board of education is accepting r & eacute;sum & eacute;s and letters of interest until Thursday from people seeking to serve on the board.
The selected candidate will fill the unexpired term of Jim Adgate, through December 2005. Adgate resigned at the end of last month.

Project to close road
BRACEVILLE -- Newton Falls Braceville Robinson Road will be closed between Nelson Mosier Road and Shihola Garrard Road starting Monday for a bridge replacement project. The Trumbull County Engineer's Office estimates work will be completed Oct. 1.
Kerry's HQ will open
WARREN -- The public is invited to the grand opening of Democratic presidential candidate's John Kerry's Trumbull County headquarters at 162 High St. N.W. on Monday.
Family Fun Fest planned
WARREN -- Trumbull County Kiwanis Clubs are hosting a Family Fun Fest at 3 p.m. Aug. 7 at the Packard Music Hall on Mahoning Avenue. Festivities will include games for adults and children, an hourlong auction, dinner, live music and fireworks. All proceeds will benefit the Children's Rehabilitation Center in Howland Township.
Tickets are $20 for adults, $5 for children ages 7-16 and children 6 and under get in free. There is a $50 cap per family, and tickets must be ordered in advance. To order tickets, call the Children's Rehabilitation Center at (330) 856-2107.
Repairs to cause delays
LISBON -- The Ohio Department of Transportation has said motorists may experience slight delays while state Route 7 and 11 and U.S. Route 30 in Columbiana County are restricted to one lane while crews repair bridge decks. The work will be done between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays starting next week and is to be completed by July 23, weather permitting.
Seeking disaster status
YOUNGSTOWN -- Gov. Bob Taft sent a letter to the head of the U.S. Department of Agriculture asking her to declare 52 Ohio counties, including Mahoning and Columbiana, as disaster areas because of agricultural losses caused by extreme weather in May.
The designation would make crop and livestock farmers in the counties eligible for disaster assistance programs, primarily low-interest loans.
Local lottery winner
YOUNGSTOWN -- Persistence paid off for a Mahoning County resident who said he'd been playing the same numbers in the Mega Millions game since its inception in May 2002. Henry C. Harris matched five numbers Tuesday to win a $175,000 second-tier prize in the Mega Millions drawing, and he'll get $125,125 after taxes, Ohio Lottery officials said. Harris, who filed his claim Thursday in the lottery's Youngstown office, bought his winning ticket at Little Tiny's, 735 N. Garland Ave., which will get a $1,000 bonus for selling it. The winning numbers were 6-7-8-31-48, and the Mega ball was 19.
