Two fatal accidents
The Ohio State Highway Patrol, Canfield post responded to two fatal accidents within minutes of each other Tuesday.
At 12:10 a.m., Stephen Houchius, 18, of Lisbon died after being struck by a pickup truck on Washingtonville Road, the patrol said. Troopers found the truck at the owner's residence and the accident remains under investigation.
At 12:45 a.m., Robert J. Repko, 72, of Market Street was hit when he walked in front of a car at U.S. Route 224 and state Route 7 in Boardman, the patrol said. The driver of the car will not be charged, the patrol said.
Cortland man is stabbed
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 39-year-old Cortland man, interviewed by police at Trumbull Memorial Hospital around 3 a.m. today, said he was stabbed in the back of the neck in downtown Youngstown after leaving a bar at 11 p.m. Tuesday.
The victim told police he was approached by a man asking for money, whom he ignored.
The victim said he was punched by the man then stabbed by someone else who came up from behind. The suspects ran, and the victim drove home then later went to the hospital.
Storm-water retention
CANFIELD -- Township trustees passed a resolution Tuesday to enter into an agreement with the Ohio Public Works Commission for a storm-water retention area on township-owned property between Fairway and Westington drives and Jamison Place. Phase Three of the Indian Run drainage improvement project is being funded by a $99,000 state grant and about $49,000 in township funds. The project will involve installation this year of a pipe under Fairway Drive to carry water from Tippecanoe Country Club to a three-acre storm water detention pond near Jamison Place.
War zone addresses
STRUTHERS -- The fraternal order of police is seeking mailing addresses of all Struthers residents serving in the war zone -- Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait -- as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The FOP plans to send each of the soldiers a package containing toiletries and treats. To provide information, call (330) 755-9960.
Arrested in break-in
YOUNGSTOWN -- Patrolman John Hull saw a smashed electricity meter on the ground at Domestic Uniform, 350 North Ave., which led to the arrest of William C. Duncan, 49, of Arlington Street. When Hull checked the building, he saw a panel missing from an overhead garage door and Duncan leaving, carrying a mop handle. Duncan told the officer that he found the door open and went in, reports show. Duncan was arrested on charges of breaking and entering and criminal damaging. Ohio Edison was called to replace the meter.
Road rage threat
AUSTINTOWN -- Police are investigating a report that a male motorist pointed a gun at another driver, a woman, and threatened to kill her Tuesday on Mahoning Avenue. The woman told police she was driving west on Mahoning Avenue on Youngstown's West Side about 7 p.m. when she accidentally honked her horn. When her and the man's cars reached the Meridian Road stoplight, the man turned and mouthed words to the woman she could not understand, the woman said. Reports state that as the cars continued west, the man rolled down his window, pointed a silver revolver at the woman, and threatened to kill her. No shots were fired. The woman told police the man eventually turned south into the Wickliffe neighborhood.
Assaulted and robbed
AUSTINTOWN -- Police are investigating a report that a Michigan truck driver was knocked unconscious and robbed early this morning outside the T/A truck stop on Seventy-six Drive. The truck driver told police he was walking outside his tractor-trailer about 1 a.m. when he was struck in the head from behind by something hard and knocked unconscious.
He said when he woke up, he tried to get to the truck stop desk to call 911, only to fall unconscious in the parking lot again.
Reports state that someone noticed the truck driver lying in the parking lot and called police. The truck driver told police $185 in cash had been taken from his pocket, but he still had his wallet and keys. He refused treatment from paramedics, reports state.
Kerry-Edwards campaign
WARREN -- Two former Warren residents were to play roles in today's appearance in Cleveland for the Kerry-Edwards campaign. Dr. Christopher Litton of Shaker Heights, a 1988 Warren JFK High School graduate and the campaign's Northeast Ohio veterans coordinator, was to host a veterans reception for John Kerry and John Edwards in Cleveland before the rally. At the rally, James Brady of Shaker Heights, a 1988 Warren G. Harding High School graduate, was to lead the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance. Litton is a history professor and Brady is a bio-technology sales manager.
