Man wanted in robbery surrenders
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A bank robbery suspect surrendered to police this morning.
James A. McCormick, 1619 Dushane St. Ext., is charged with robbery, theft and receiving stolen property in the robbery of National City Bank on North Mill Street at 1:36 p.m. Tuesday.
Police said a man wearing a light colored fisherman's hat and jacket told a teller: "This is an armed robbery." The teller did not understand him and he had to repeat it twice before asking for $20 and $50 bills, police said. He left with an undisclosed amount of money.
Police said a bank customer followed the robber outside and heard him say "I'm going to jail for this."
Police said three other people saw the man throw his sunglasses, hat and sweat shirt to the ground after leaving.
Witnesses later identified McCormick through a photo lineup, Police Chief Tom Sansone said.
Sansone said McCormick went to a nearby restaurant and got a ride to the city's south side. Police searched his house and nearby woods Tuesday but could not find him. He was arrested at 4:30 a.m. today at his home after turning himself in by calling 911, Sansone said. Police said they have not found any of the money.
Sansone said that the FBI was called in to help and that the charges may be transferred to federal court.
