WARREN -- Two former Warren residents were to play roles in today's appearance in Cleveland for the Kerry-Edwards campaign. Dr. Christopher Litton of Shaker Heights, a 1988 Warren JFK High School graduate and the campaign's Northeast Ohio veterans coordinator, was to host a veterans reception for John Kerry and John Edwards in Cleveland before the rally. At the rally, James Brady of Shaker Heights, a 1988 Warren G. Harding High School graduate, was to lead the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance. Litton is a history professor, and Brady is a biotechnology sales manager.
McKinley Elementary tour
WARREN -- The city school district will offer the public an opportunity to walk the halls of McKinley Elementary from 10 a.m. to noon and from 6 to 7 p.m. July 14 and July 21. The public can tour the school, hear about its history, share stories and enjoy refreshments.
Beginning in 2006, Warren City School District will benefit from six new schools over the next five years as part of an Ohio School Facilities Commission project. OSFC is providing approximately 81 percent of the estimated $170 million project cost with a bond issue passed last November covering the remainder.
Cortland man stabbed
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 39-year-old Cortland man, interviewed by police at Trumbull Memorial Hospital around 3 a.m. today, said he was stabbed in the back of the neck in downtown Youngstown after leaving a bar at 11 p.m. Tuesday. The victim told police he was approached by a man asking for money, whom he ignored. The victim said he was punched by the man then stabbed by someone else who came up from behind. The suspects ran, and the victim drove home, then later went to the hospital.
Fatal fire in Warren
WARREN -- A gas stove burner left on caused a blaze Friday evening that left a Washington Street man dead.
Fire Chief Ken Nussle said firefighters don't know if Jerry Womer, who lived at 370 Washington St. N.E., had been cooking or had been using the burner as a night light.
Womer was found dead on the second floor.
School board meeting
HOWLAND -- The board of education will meet at 9 a.m. Thursday to discuss how it will select a replacement for James D. Adgate, who resigned from the board last week.
If the board does not take action within 30 days, the Trumbull County Educational Services Center will appoint someone to serve the remaining 18 months in Adgate's term.
The board of education is not expected to actually choose a replacement for Adgate on Thursday, Superintendent John Rubesich said.
Cortland Car Show set
CORTLAND -- The annual Cortland Car Show, sponsored by the Cortland Lions Club, is set for noon to 3 p.m. July 18 on Main Street.
Registration is from 8 to 11 a.m. that morning, at a cost of $8. Preregistration costs $5. There is no admission fee for the public.
DJ Chuck Abbott will provide music throughout the show.
In addition to the show, the Cortland Lions Club will serve breakfast from 7:30 to 11 a.m. for a small fee.

Two fatal accidents
The Ohio State Highway Patrol Canfield post responded to two fatal accidents within minutes of each other Tuesday. At 12:10 a.m., Stephen Houchius, 18, of Lisbon died after being struck by a pickup truck on Washingtonville Road, the patrol said. Troopers found the truck at the owner's residence, and the accident remains under investigation.
At 12:45 a.m., Robert J. Repko, 72, of Market Street was hit when he walked in front of a car at U.S. Route 224 and state Route 7 in Boardman, the patrol said. The driver of the car will not be charged, the patrol said.
Arrested in break-in
YOUNGSTOWN -- Patrolman John Hull saw a smashed electricity meter on the ground at Domestic Uniform, 350 North Ave., which led to the arrest of William C. Duncan, 49, of Arlington Street. When Hull checked the building, he saw a panel missing from an overhead garage door and Duncan leaving, carrying a mop handle. Duncan told the officer that he found the door open and went in, reports show. Duncan was arrested on charges of breaking and entering and criminal damaging. Ohio Edison was called to replace the meter.
Man found shot
SHARON, Pa. -- Police said a man was found shot in the head in an East State Street parking lot. James Rowe, 76, of Cortland, Neb., was in a car in the lot of Sample & amp; O'Donnell Funeral Home around 7 p.m. Tuesday. He had suffered a gunshot wound to the head and a handgun and a note were found with him, police said. He was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital, police said.
